Desktop Customization

i saw this iphone homescreen mockup recently and suddenly got really interested in customizing my desktop.

is there a comparable thing for a desktop? id really like to have that sort of info pane as a right sidebar, kinda like windows vista (i cant believe i said that). things like live updating of today's ical events, brief mail snippets, weather, on the side pane would be great



also, what other apps are out there for fun customizing? i only know of geektool so far. thanks a lot.

    OSX has widgets.
