The advantage of an Atom based tablet running full OSX is that you can run any of the normal productivity apps on the tablet if you had a keyboard and mouse attached (just sloooowly). Porting iPhone apps to the tablet wouldn't be hard and more likely than the other direction.
exactly. the iPhone Safari app is a simplified version of regular Mac Safari. likewise Apple can/will create simpler app versions of the iLife and iWork applications for the iTab (maybe work on iPhone too). iWork can handle all the MS Office file types, Keynote can handle all the Powerpoint files, etc., so you don't need MS at all. an IMovie app and Keynote app are essential. a Garage Band app would make the iTab a portable recording studio ...
power users will still want a laptop. but for us casual users the simpler iTab apps will be all we need most of the time.
For me it is Photoshop and Illustrator and unfortunately the Microsoft suite. I also think it NEEDS to have a pen/stylus. Yes I realize the limitations that the hardware will put on an application like Photoshop, but the "freedom" that a tablet brings to the application is a natural fit.
There's no way those applications would run on that hardware. Never even mind the bloat-a-riffic installed sizes; the applications would bring a power-sipping ARM platform to its knees.
And since they're Carbon apps, they'd have to be updated just to work on the tablet.
Document-level compatibility with those apps is enough. The iPhone already has that.
Given the above I think that it is unrealistic to assume that the software developers will maintain yet another set of code specifically for a tablet based system. The applications that will be most in demand are already desktop based (OS X) so it is logical to use that OS for the device with alterations to the OS to allow for easy integration in the new interface without the need for the developers to maintain another set of code for the software.
You realize that that's what iPhone OS is, right? It's not that big a deal to port from OS X to iPhone OS unless you have a codebase written in Carbon. But you don't want to saddle the tablet with that code, because it has all kinds of assumptions about the nature and power of the hardware it's running on baked in to the code.
Apple has been really smart about this. If anyone pulls this off smoothly, it will be them.

I think that's a very incisive post. Many people may want 'Mac OS X' but they may not be getting that...and all it's legacy barnacle code. It looks like they're getting 'Mac iPhone OS X' instead.

I don't think so. The iPhone/iPod touch already have more apps that dwarf the amount of apps the Mac has had in it's entire life. That shouldn't be overlooked. And there's no doubt that the 'iSlate' is going to add another level of sophistication to that App base. It looks increasingly like the iPhone 'OS' or 'OS X' is going mainstream and the Mac will continue along its path. It's tailored OS X. Flavour for this...flavour for that...but still ice cream 'X' at the end of the day.
So, no, I guess I don't see Photoshop running on this with Adobe's trademark bloat. If they can't do flash right on the iPhone? Forget it. But, yes, the old apps? No.
It's a giant iPhone with the bells and whistles you'd expect. Just getting the extra 'inches' to browse on the sofa...is fine enough for me. Control your Apple TV. Steam a movie from Apple TV/Mac server? I dunno. But it's going to be more comfy on the eyes than an iPHone for extended browsing.
Core animation, remember that? I think we'll see even more use of that. It will be interesting to see how they handle the increased 'slate' size. I think the new Quicktime X on the Mac and the iPod nano video shows hints of the stuff that MAY make it across...common interface stuff that is simple and works on Mac/iPhone. But I'd expect the iphone keyboard to undergo a makeover...and some word processor capability. Maybe even a version of iWorks ported over? Light emails and word processing? Dunno, stick 'preview' on a giant iPhone and you've got an e-book reader?
Rambling out loud. Er...gestures? Thinks of Magic Mouse and Laptop glasspad. I guess we'll see an even bigger army of gestures/strokes? Sure, M$ and HP are touting desktops with grease stains on them. But I think Apple are going to blow their doors off with the slate and show that desktops aint where tough is for now. (Fancy using gestures on a 27 inch iMac? No thanks. Stiff shoulder...) But on a slate? Baybee. I wanna stroke you all day.
I'd expect the device to replicate 'netbook' functionality easily, the e-Book functionality of kindle and the multi-media goodliness of iPod.
To be honest. I'm surprised it's taking them so long.
Still, battery life to the max and an industry beating profile ala slender to make Netbooks weep? I guess I can see them want to take the 'lego brick' tablet of the PC industry and shame them with their 'version.'
Game over rest of PC world and netbooks if they do. They kill all if so. It's a critical mass chain reaction ground zero death match end game. Surely...they wouldn't deliver the killing blow to M$ by doing this?
