LOTR

Anyone looking forward to the Lord of the Rings movies? I started the first book a long ass time ago but never got through it.

So I take it the first movie just does Fellowship of the Rings? That volume ends with no resolution at all, kind of like Empire Strikes Back. Not the way Hollywood likes movies to end. I hope they don't ruin it and out a happy ending on it. 'cause the book doesn't have one at all. From what I can tell from the LOTR movie sites they are doing a damn fine job of sticking to the story.

Each movie will come out the next year. Christmas 2001, 2002, 2003. They must be shooting the whole thing all along and editing it in Fellowship and the rest as the go.

Trying not to think about it too much.

I walked into Harry Potter flick with expectations unrealistically high and was disappointed for it.

I'll just think "la-dee-da" in regards to the LOTR and be satisfied by the flick.

I liked Harry Potter but never read the books. So I had nothing to be disappointed about. Also IMO Harry Potter was a "kids movie". By that I mean if you're not a kid it would be harder to enjoy. Unlike say Monsters Inc which is a kids movie that I think anyone can enjoy.

I would hope that LOTR is an "adult movie". Considering how graphic the monsters are I think that will be the case. I hope the intended audience is adults.

I think Lord of the Rings is probably one of the toughest translations from page to screen attempted so far. I found the books pretty boring, to be honest, but there are millions of fans worldwide who will be somewhat upset if the movies don't live up to expectations.

I'd like to see it do well just because I like Peter Jackson. "Heavenly Creatures" is a great movie. I'm also happy that the studio allowed him to take on this task instead of handing it over to some "bigger" director. Chris Columbus would not have been my choice for Harry Potter.

Regarding the more "adult" nature of the movies, that would certainly seem to be the case from viewing the trailers, and is most certainly the case with the books.

I think it says a lot that the first two movies of the original Star Wars series were targeted at adults, whilst Return of the Jedi was shot with the popularity of the first two amongst kids in mind. Hence the Ewoks. Unfortunately, George Lucas has seen fit to continue this thinking with the new movies.

Speaking of grown-up stuff, I see there are going to be "adult" editions of the Harry Potter books... No, Harry isn't going to get to second base with Hermione... they just come in paperback with more grown-up covers.

[Edit: Did I use too many "s? ]

I never read any of the books in the trilogy due to lack of interest. The movie is the same. I think the movie will do well, but not amazingly well. I predict it will gross around $230M.

Compare that with Harry Potter...which has grossed $200M in less than 2 weeks and Monsters, Inc. with $200M in 4 weeks.

For reference, $200M is not an easy mark to hit in the least. Look at how Pearl Harbor did...It did not break $200M.

lotr were a great series of books. sometimes you have to read a bit into them before they'll catch your interest with older books.

i think the harry potter ones were fine for kids, but a know a ton of adults that want to see the lotr series.

for those of you that haven't read them, i'd give them a shot. they're better than you think.

he he, when i was growing up, i had the cartoon rendition of the stories, they were cool, but these look way better.

I have heard rumors that they are going to show the first couple chapters of the second book with the first movie to give it a more normal movie ending. It will still be slightly like the Empire Strikes Back though since they can't resolve all the issues. I am in the process of reading the trilogy but got bored at the second book with all the ents. I will finish it someday. Hopefully before LOTR book II comes out.

Don't ruin it. I'm reading the Ents part right now. There's no reason why you can't go from one book to the other in the movie. The author wrote them as one long book published in three parts.

I'm finding the Ents rather interesting. Rather odd creatures they are. I also have no base for what they should look like. So I would be neat to see what they come up with for the movie.

I'm from the Star Wars generation. I wonder if the reason we liked it so much was because the first movie was not made for kids. It's a "real" movie that doesn't talk down to you. Han Solo was a cold blooded killer. Yet he's a hero? What kids movie has that kind of idea?

    I'm just rambling now.

Han isn't a cold-blooded killer anymore, the re-edit shows the bounty hunter shooting first.

    Lame ass shit.

I just watched that and didn't notice it. At the very least Guido (sp?) had his gun out. Guido shooting first makes no sence. He wanted Han alive. Also Jaba letting Han go doesn't compute either. You send a bounty hunter to get Han but then later you see Han, get trash talked by him, then let him fly off?

Lucas sucks and is a fat loser.

Yeah, but Pearl Harbor was slated as being utter trash and, from what I hear, historically inaccurate to boot. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I meant they will show the parts from book II up to the ents. I haven't read all the ents part either so I have no idea what happens.

I think in Star Wars ( the reedited one ) Han convinces Jaba that he will repay him with the money he is going to get from taking Luke and Obi Wan somewhere ( I forgot where they went to ). That is why Jaba lets him go.

Well yea but then how does it go that Boba Fet (sp?) gets him at Cloud City. I can't remember if Han, after the death star, got his money and went back to pay Jaba. So in Empire he's on the frozen planet (how did he get there? why not repay Jaba right off?) and has to goto the Cloud City. I can't remember why.

But anyway in Star Wars the original at the end Han is a wanted man. In Star Wars Redux he cuts a deal with Jaba and is no longer hunted. So then does that mean he was too slow in paying back Jaba or did he try to cheat Jaba again? Why is Boba Fet still after him if there's no bounty?

See the first time around it worked and after the rework it doesn't.

LOTR will be amazing purely because of the visuals. Have you guys seen the trailers? It looks like "Willow" meets "Ran". Theres scenes that give me the same effect as when I saw the lone white figgure wandering down the grey stone castle in Ran.

Lets just hope that it doesnt get ****ed up in the screenwriting process (*coughJohnnyNeumoniccough*).

Nevertheless, Pearl Harbor had the typical blockbuster formula, which is generally a foolproof way to break $200M these days.

Look at Rush Hour 2...it broke $200M with ease.

I don't remember why Han was on the frozen planet ( named Goth? ). But I do remember he was going to leave to go repay Jaba when the empire attacked. I think he then felt guilty and helped them flee. What happened next? I don't remember. Boba Fett was probably after him in the end because Jaba felt Han was taking too long.
