Yeah. As much as I've been in favour of "iBook," I was thinking it was almost certain that they would go with "iPad."
You have to go back a hundred years or more for "slates" to be in use and I would bet not many people alive today even know the history of the term. Jobs must think this thing is the cat's pyjamas to reach so far back in history for such an iconic name.
I suspect that the name will end up being more like the ipod slate (to signify that it is using the iphone/pod OS and not the mac one) rather than just the islate.
My only concern is that there is going to be a lawsuit from slate.com about name confusion, and that could slow things down. (I vaguely recall that iPhone was the object of a similar lawsuit?).
Slate is a type of rock or a flat piece of this rock used for roofing and stuff.
1.\ta fine-grained rock formed by the metamorphosis of clay, shale, etc., that tends to split along parallel cleavage planes, usually at an angle to the planes of stratification.
2.\ta thin piece or plate of this rock or a similar material, used esp. for roofing or as a writing surface.
3.\ta dull, dark bluish gray.
4.\ta list of candidates, officers, etc., to be considered for nomination, appointment, election, or the like.

Why not take a look at the Thesaurus link I provided -- it is much more than the above. It has quite a wide-ranging set of meanings. (It is not accidental that one of the very early, influential and intellectually weighty web publications was called "slate.com").
My only concern is that there is going to be a lawsuit from slate.com about name confusion, and that could slow things down. (I vaguely recall that iPhone was the object of a similar lawsuit?).
Slate is both a verb and a noun. Their figurative and proper meanings are right on target for a 'back to the Future' universal interactive medium. It's a shout out to its intended aims as crystal clear as one would and could project it to be.
It is ''2001, a space Odyssey'' levitating off those rectangular hard rock scribbling tablet of years gone by. Solid, age old, down to earth right hand man, alter ego, the 21st century Edition .
Powerful evocative stuff indeed.
If you?re looking for a ?clean slate? here, there you go; no ?pod?, ?Mac?, ?Book?, ?phone?, ?Newton? need apply!
iSlate sounds awfully like isolate, doesn?t it ? Perfect. It enhances the prefix i, first person singular, as in ?? i?m in control of what i do, i create, i copy, i write, i read, i draught, etc and i?m in control of what i want to share with you??. It empowers big time.
Slip of the tongue anyone? iState is immensely more likely to be heard across the board than iSlut; a consonna begs to differ, a vowell stands to simmer...
Of course, after Apple (and it's free media sources) advertise the fscking hell out of iSlate and it becomes a common household world, then people will drool the second iSlate is mentioned, like a conditioned dog.
Bookmark this thread, it will be interesting to read these comments a couple of years from now.
iSlate
say it with me
iSlate
I said say iSlate!
We iSlate, you iSlate, everyone iSlates.
Yip, yip, hurrah! iSlate!! *imagine sexy college cheerleaders*
Your now conditioned, your also drooling. Step away from the keyboard.
Please stop linking everything to the rumored tablet. We have been hearing about this tablet since before the iPhone and still nothing and it is getting silly and boring. Apple may or may not release a tablet and until they do it is not a really important.
"Apple believed to have bought a nuclear reactor indicating a possible use in the company's much-rumored tablet device."
Sweet.

I would guess that if it's Slate, it would be referred to as Apple Slate, or see below:

I think it's unfortunate that it's harder to enforce trademarks on a name unless it's a bastardized word, that has led to lots of product and service names that are starting to get irritating, I also don't like camel case.
It seems that the only thing we can assume with any confidence is that it won?t be called ?Mac <something>? as it would seem to imply that is has a full copy of Mac OS X on it, which seems highly unlikely. If it starts with ?i? I think we can assume that Apple wants us to see it as an accessory device to a PC, synced via iTunes. For these reasons I think the Apple Slate or Apple Tablet is not only a good name but defines the designation nicely by separating from the pocketable devices and their PC line.

I like the idea of Apple Slate which clearly sets it apart from both categories and into some middle ground that hasn?t ben chartered much.
If it?s called Apple Slate (or even iPod Slate) it?ll likely have iSlate as its sobriquet, hence Apple?s purchase of the site. Some because they don?t better and others because it?ll easier to type/say. Then again, it could just be to keep others from using it or they?ve changed their mind in the 3 years since they bought it.
PS: To the posters aren?t getting slate. Slate was also used for writing on, more commonly referred to as a chalk board. Regardless of how well the definition fits you just have to look at the iPod to see a widely successful device with a less attributable name than iSlate.
Comments
this 'discovery' could be totally meaningless.
Better, I think, is Pal, or Palette, which is more tasteful (ha) and is an artist's tool, is sort of french, which apple seems to like, etc.
I agree that isLate will not work.
... Crap name for a gadget though. ...

Means it will be dull and non-glossy, no glare and reflections to give me eyestrain and headaches.
I like it.
