One question though, why if Perian is installed on both Macs can I not find the Perian.component file on my Air, anywhere? Not in System/Library/Quicktime or Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime. No doubt it's somewhere, but why is not in where you would expect it?

Try /Users/Ireland/Library/Quicktime.
Also make sure you have a proper codec pack installed. The best one I've been able to find is Perian. As I've told a few other people here who have asked, there is a review of it online I found to be really helpful: http://appducate.com/2012/12/perian-lets-your-mac-play-most-video-formats/
