    Is it possible to burn a bootable image of an install DVD and then use it as if it were the original?

    Just curious... if you have the original then why would you need to also burn a bootable image?

    Yes. Wasn't with Leopard, seems to be with SL.

    So that's not a solution for the OP if he insists on OSX 10.5.

    I've seen other posts indicating that people have recently acquired a retail version of Leopard from Apple. No, not in the store, and not even from the online store. You have to call the number found there.
