Actually, they are stating that they wil be changing the name to DirectWire. Apple problem ?

GigaWire is not included in current driver version( 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 ).

We are working for next version (v3.5) to include GigaWire.

And it's name will be changed to DirectWire.

Okay Apple does NOT have a patent on GigaWire, it has a TradeMark/ServiceMark/WordMark on it. It's a big difference and nobody around here really knows what patent goes along with the TM/SM/WM.

    Here is an example

The technology behind the 802.11b spec would be granted a Patent and Apple has chosen to TM/SM/WM the word AirPort for the brand name of that technology. In this case Apple holds the TM/SM/WM but not any part of the Patent.

The technology behind the 1394 spec would be granted a Patent and Apple has chosen to TM/SM/WM the word FireWire for the brand name of that technology. In this case Apple not only holds the TM/SM/WM but also one or more of the Patents that make it up... IIRC other companies also might share in some of the Patent ownership. (maybe not?)

The technology behind the ???? spec would be granted a Patent and Apple has chosen to TM/SM/WM the word GigaWire for the brand name of that technology. The ???? is what nobody is quite sure about.

Some think ???? = the new higher speed 1394 spec and it does make sense but when someone takes the time to really READ the FireWire TM/SM/WM and then the GigaWire TM/SM/WM they sure don't sound the same... Not even close.

Firgure out what ???? and then you'll know for sure what GigaWire really is. I keep hearing (and it might be the same report being re-stated over and over by people who want to 'sound' informed - warning that happens ALL THE TIME it's very hard to take way anyone says at face value)

Anyway the report that I read (a few times) is that one of the latest Cicso routers has a new hub that uses GigaWire as a method to interconnect two or more hubs. All the reports read kinda-sorta the same and then they say GigaWire is mentioned in the manual and they would scan a copy and post it (but never do). Now if that IS a real report then I could see GigaWire = New FireWire but if it's someone just BSing to make themselves look more important then... All bets are off...

    Hope this helps
