Furthermore, one could highlight, underline and annotate their books using the touch interface.

If you're a student and you think this is the answer to your prayers you better reevaluate the situation. First this is not going to replace your textbooks anytime soon because you'll quickly realize (like I did) that most of your text books won't be available on this thing. Even if they are it's a pain trying to work out of them when doing assignments, going back and forth through the pages. The few books that are available aren't much cheaper than the real version, and you can't sell them after the class is over. You're not going to want to write papers on this thing so you're still going to need a computer, and is it really that hard to bring a textbook or two with you to class? Wait a week or two and save an extra $200 and get a MacBook. That's what you need, not this junk.

Nope, and I never said it was. All I said was it was for people with more money than brains because it doesn't do anything! Use your discretionary income to buy something useful like a MacBook Air. You wouldn't by any chance own an Apple TV would you?

Why the fuck doesn't the iPad have a built-in camera for Skype?!?

coz its only the 1st Generation... just hold ur patience for a generation or two more...

Common, that's a terrible excuse. Even the iPod which "no one would want to watch movies on" has a camera in it now. This would have been an acceptable omission ~ 1999 - 2001.

Good point, however there is no multi-tasking to access those notes quickly thus making it a pain in the butt to use. You can do that on a laptop. That's why I do a face palm when I hear students say "I can use this for class." By the time you get done buying all of the docks, interfaces, etc., you can have a really nice MacBook with all of that built-in AND a camera for Skype!

Please understand I do like your idea. I use the notepad app often while listening to audible books and podcasts when something of interest comes up.

Why are you so concerned with critiquing the gadgets that other people own? Who died and made you God?

You do realize that there are plenty of people who think the MacBook Air is "for people with more money than brains"? Which makes your criticism a little suspect...

FWIW, I briefly owned an AppleTV but returned it for a Mac mini which is a ton more versatile -- but doesn't play AppleTV-only content from the iTunes store.

There is only one God, and I'm not qualified to shine his/her preverbal shoes. However on planet earth where good and bad products are introduced, I have the right to critique just about anything I want to. Doesn't necessarily mean I'll always be right.... As a shareholder in Apple, I think I have every right to give them an attaboy when they get something right, and boo his when they don't.

I feel this product misses the mark just as bad as the Apple TV did. It appears you agree with at least half of that statement. Unlike Mossberg I don't have to worry about getting secret previews of products, so I can say what I want.

There is a starting resentment towards Apple on how they drag their feet introducing new features. There are some talented competitors out there with an increased focus on industrial design. I want Apple to continue to be the leader they have been. As I see it they are 1 for 3 over the last few years in new product launches.

I wanted the iPad to be something new and exciting, however it will take another revision or two to bring it up to the level of some of the better netbooks out there now.

My point was that there is a difference between "This isn't a great product for me" and "This isn't a great product for anyone" and "You'd have to be a fool to buy this".

The AppleTV and the PS3 (as a HTPC) and the Mac mini (as a HTPC) all miss the mark, I just picked the one that missed the mark the least.

OBTW, I'm withholding judgment on the iPad until I get my hands on one. I'm hoping this will be a great surf the web and read email device to use sitting on my sofa. Really, it's the touch keyboard I'll be the most interested in and that will be the most make-or-break factor.

I've been waiting a long time for a home entertainment solution and will probably go the Mini route myself. I guess I came off a little harsh because I was seriously disappointed. I don't think I was hoping for anything mystical, but I can see where the revision 2 hardware has a lot of opportunities for improvement. I'll take another look when that time comes.

There were a lot of people in the tech industry saying all they way until Tuesday that this product has to be more than just a big iPod Touch to succeed. After it was introduced they were drooling all over themselves like little school girls even though it wasn't much more than a big iPod Touch....
