As a previous poster posted. Cancel iPhone and sell it. buy ipad and pay $30 for unlimited data. Get cheap phone with cheaper plan and save some money. You won't be the only one doing that.
I humbly beg to differ. I'm a student, so I definitely don't have "More money than I know what to do with", yet I'm still seriously considering this product. It would be a great textbook reader, and not having to buy the paper textbooks would be wonderful, and its such a pain to drag them around. Furthermore, one could highlight, underline and annotate their books using the touch interface.
If you're a student and you think this is the answer to your prayers you better reevaluate the situation. First this is not going to replace your textbooks anytime soon because you'll quickly realize (like I did) that most of your text books won't be available on this thing. Even if they are it's a pain trying to work out of them when doing assignments, going back and forth through the pages. The few books that are available aren't much cheaper than the real version, and you can't sell them after the class is over. You're not going to want to write papers on this thing so you're still going to need a computer, and is it really that hard to bring a textbook or two with you to class? Wait a week or two and save an extra $200 and get a MacBook. That's what you need, not this junk.

coz its only the 1st Generation... just hold ur patience for a generation or two more...
If it could be used as a screen for, say, the Mini, then we're talking about an all-in-one device I could buy my kid to take to college. The Mini stays in the dorm room while the iPad goes off to class for note-taking, recording lectures (if it has a mic?), text books, etc..

Common, that's a terrible excuse. Even the iPod which "no one would want to watch movies on" has a camera in it now. This would have been an acceptable omission ~ 1999 - 2001.

Good point, however there is no multi-tasking to access those notes quickly thus making it a pain in the butt to use. You can do that on a laptop. That's why I do a face palm when I hear students say "I can use this for class." By the time you get done buying all of the docks, interfaces, etc., you can have a really nice MacBook with all of that built-in AND a camera for Skype!

I feel this product misses the mark just as bad as the Apple TV did. It appears you agree with at least half of that statement. Unlike Mossberg I don't have to worry about getting secret previews of products, so I can say what I want.
There is a starting resentment towards Apple on how they drag their feet introducing new features. There are some talented competitors out there with an increased focus on industrial design. I want Apple to continue to be the leader they have been. As I see it they are 1 for 3 over the last few years in new product launches.
I wanted the iPad to be something new and exciting, however it will take another revision or two to bring it up to the level of some of the better netbooks out there now.
My point was that there is a difference between "This isn't a great product for me" and "This isn't a great product for anyone" and "You'd have to be a fool to buy this".

I've been waiting a long time for a home entertainment solution and will probably go the Mini route myself. I guess I came off a little harsh because I was seriously disappointed. I don't think I was hoping for anything mystical, but I can see where the revision 2 hardware has a lot of opportunities for improvement. I'll take another look when that time comes.
There were a lot of people in the tech industry saying all they way until Tuesday that this product has to be more than just a big iPod Touch to succeed. After it was introduced they were drooling all over themselves like little school girls even though it wasn't much more than a big iPod Touch....
