Just like how Verizon, Sprint and Miscrosoft all criticized the iPhone.

I was watching the keynote and the demo of iWork. I kept thinking, how did these files that they're playing with get on the iPad? How do you build one of these files from scratch using the iPad? Where are these files stored?

I have no idea why Apple, or Steve didnt announce this at the event but there is way to share documents between applications.

Or here's another common useage scenario - a non techy person buys an iPad, believing the ads that it's netbook replacement. They go (in the UK) BBC iPlayer, or (in the US) Hulu. Oops, no flash. Two of the most popular sites in the world rendered utterly useless. So they go to Facebook. They see pretty much all their friends playing farmville, poker, and many other facebook apps. They want to play too. Ooops, flash required again!

They give up, and decide to browse some non flash sites, ignoring the giant missing flash plug-in boxes all over the place. They receive an IM from a friend, but oh no, they have to quit Safari just to reply to an IM... That can't be right, can it? They send their message and go back to Safari. Another message comes in, so they quit again, load IM again, and repeat. Pretty soon that gets awfully tiring.

I suspect that Apple will allow limited multi-tasking and probably before release too, but if not version 3.2.1 of the software - its the kind of restriction that makes sense on an iPhone but not on an iPad but as far as I know nobody knows whether they have that restriction, or not, it just seemed that they did because the method of exciting the applications was to hit the home screen. As with the iPhone.

We have no idea if technically one of those applications can launch a helper application, or not. It may be able to. Either way an unlocked version will - which is, of course - not a big deal in this case ( unlocking, I mean).

As for the rest of your arguments, there will be an iPlayer iPad application - I think there is an iPhone application as it is, if so tis done. If not, it will be. That will be true of all websites who want to run on an iPad ( the thing will not be the best for porn but what ya gonna do?). That possibly small percentage of facebook users who dont want to just update on the FaceBook application but want to use Flash are not in luck. What they should do is not buy an iPad. Problem solved and let's move on.

(And given the hysterical over-reaction to the lack of Flash on the iPad I expect that my 96 year old great-granny will be talking about this next time I visit the home. Nobody can claim they didnt know.)

Meanwhile, the rest of us will make do with a empty plugin sign where once their could have been an annoying flash add. We will live with that. We could also live without farmville - after all most people do.

As for the Openness, or not, of the platform. The people who give a sh*t are not the market. When an aged relative of yours asks whether to buy the iPad with its ( then 500,000) applications, or a Linux notepad with it's 26 applications ( 512 if you know how to use a make file and install.sh) and you promote the openess of the OS with less applications they will probably ignore you. Well unless they like futzing around with install.sh.

And as usual, as with the people who bemoaned the iPhone's lack of Blah or Foo, or blahFoo; you miss the most important point. How does the entrie thing integrate? How does the software work in real lives, in real hands?

We will know when we see it. Ask late iPhone adopters - I was a Fan boy but most werent - they tried it out and bought it. That too, here.

And Flash bedamned. We dont care. Future iPhone users don't care. Possibly Flash devs care.

Never mind, their relative in some distant land has sent their Skype ID over so they can have a video chat.. Oops, no Skype on the iPad, no camera either!

Disappointed, the average non-techy user takes the iPad back, and buys a cheap Win7 laptop.

Like it or not, even for very average users the iPad is a dud.

    Yawn...

Flash back a few years: "iPhone? iPhony, more like. It may not be "pretty" like the fan boys love, but at least my Windows Mobile phone has cut and paste, a decent camera, and runs all my business centric apps."

Then just repeat your list of "missing features" over and over and over again, as if you were making a coherent argument. Post your list 10, 20, 100 times per thread, that way everybody will learn and come to agree with you.

    That'll work.

I don't know, but it was pointed out during the Keynote by his Royal Steveness that the iPad Pages files were compatible with the Mac versions. Obviously that remark would have no meaning if the Mac Pages files couldn't make it usefully onto the iPad and vice versa. Yet to be revealed I suppose. Watch this space.

    I actually agree with some of this - not deal-breakers by any means but ;

    1) Adobe fix flash FFS and Apple will have to put it in the browser (Adobe have brought this on themselves)

    2) Apple In iPhone OS 4.0 permit 'concurrent' Multi-tasking for Mail, Safari and Ipod App and ONE designated Chat app only (Chat app identified and allocated in settings from your app list). Create a gesture that 'flips' between them. Draw a anti-clockwise circle for left, clockwise for right or something.

    3) USB is moot - email or use iPads' file sharing built in

    4) To late to get a front facing camera this generation - not essential in my mind would have been smart though for video iChat - though the iPhone 4 better have one!

Yes they are very poor competition. I have the latest and greatest netbook and it sucks. The only reason I have it is because I did not want to spend money on a laptop but needed a Windoze machine for a few things.

It is if they criticize Apple for putting iPhone OS on the iPad then they go a head and do the same thing. But again, that won't be MS first.

Even though I got pulled over doing 45 mph in a 45 mph zone and I was heading into a 55 mph zone (about 200 ft in from of me and the cop by the time I got pulled over) the cop said I accelerated too quickly and gave me a ticket. "Reckless driving" I believe.

That's not the information I'm talking about, it goes beyond that, gleaming Address Book info and other things.

You should really study up on the lack of privacy issues of iPhones and Apps.

There is a nice PDF floating around that describes the security and privacy issues with the iPhone/Apps. You might find it in the AI iPhone forum. I won't provide a link, because you wouldn't believe it anyway.

My vote is for "iVue" but then just about anything would be better than iPad.

No confusing file system exposed to the user. That's not to say that the old ways will go away. I'm sure they will be with us for a long long time. But I DO NOT see the iPad going in that direction. The iPad is a new kind of device. Making it more like a laptop would be going backwards.

The whole point of the cloud is that it's os agnostic. You can access any content from any os with a plugin. With the ipad you are locked into iTunes. If I want to watch caprica a day acerbic it comes out I have to buy it from iTunes. If I had flash I could watch it for free

iTunes is too much of a cash cow so apple is building a walled garden like it did in the 1980's.

With my iPhone flash isn't that big a deal since it's mostly a cell phone. With a tablet I expect laptop features and freedom.

as the iPOD evolved, hopefully so will the iPAD. One can easily imagine, in the near future, a Macbook loosing the lid, adopting multi-touch, usb/firewire, mini-display.

I really would love an iPAD that I can use the same way as a Macbook. Hard Drive, install software (not to be confused with apps LOL), plug in external drives, etc. -- it will happen, just a matter of when.

Well, you'd probably want a keyboard also. So just get a MacBook or if you want it thinner and lighter, a MacBook Air.

The iPad is a different class of product - like others have said, it is an appliance for doing specific things, but not for computer/OS tinkerers or software geeks (unless you're writing apps for it, in which case, you still need a Mac). Many people haven't realized yet that all they need is this appliance, they don't really need a computer like a Mac or PC.

DigiTimes reports that several Asian notebook manufacturers were taken by surprise by the unexpectedly low entry-level $499 price point for Apple's iPad, forcing them to reconsider how they will price upcoming tablet models.

The vendors originally planned to offer prices pegged at 20-30% lower than the Apple iPad, while they generally expected the device to cost as much as US$1,000. The US$499 entry-level price has caught vendors by surprise and means they will now need to adjust their price scales even lower to attract consumers, the sources pointed out.

The report notes that manufacturers are reluctant to undercut the iPad price and start a pricing war for fear of eliminating profit margins even before the industry can really take hold. The fears seem justified in light of plunging netbook prices, which have reduced profits in that segment to razor-thin margins even as unit sales have exploded.

Reports as long as ago as last August claimed that tablet manufacturers were holding off on new designs for their products until they could see what Apple's contribution to the market would be.

The iPad is a worrying step in home computing, a move from open platforms to an incredibly closed, restrictive platform. People accept limitations on smart phones because they are tiny and underpowered, but on a laptop/netbook type system, no chance. It's either open or not worth considering for a second.

Apple should have just sold it as a Kindle competitor (although not of course outside the US, where Apple will not sell ebooks at all). By going after the netbook market all the do is illustrate how incredibly primative and limited the iPad is. My first computer ever (a Commodore 64) was more open than an iPad.

I'm confused. I understand that to some people, Flash and multi-tasking and the ability to load any application you want are very important features. Apple thinks they're not so important for their mobile devices, and I agree. You guys are free to disagree as vehemently as you like, but I'm confused as to why you choose to spend so much of your time on Apple sites ranting about your frustrations, sharing your hostilities. Just go out, buy and enjoy the competing products that you prefer. That's perfectly okay by me!
