Very good points. Applies to the Flash haters too. Why are they hating on Flash so much on a non Adobe site? Why don't they just shut up and just not use Flash?

Apple also sells the device around the world and they needed a name that would be world-wide and easy to catch.

I hear ya. I can't imagine a case where someone would say "What's it called? iPad? Oh, I'm not buying it then!" It's a tempest in a teacup brewed by people who can't go through one day without getting their panties all bunched up about something.

Um, you should not bring up Disney when discussing the iPad. You get the blue lego brick where video normally appears. Yeah, Flash.

Nothing I have said is ignorant, it's all, shock horror, actually based on facts.

Fact - Flash is everywhere on the web. iPad does not support flash, therefore Job's claim of the iPad beind a great way to browse the web is simply untrue.

Fact - Multi-tasking has been standard in computers since the late 1980s. For a new computer not to have it, is an incredible omission.

Fact - USB is an interface common to virtually all computing devices. The iPad does not have a USB port.

Fact - You evidently have no argument, just cheap insults. Good night!

Fact - iPhone has no multi-tasking, and does not support Flash, but is the best selling smartphone and probably will be for a long time. iPhone went against all the norms within the smartphone industry and it has been a very successful venture for Apple.

I do not know, if iPad will be successful, as much as I enjoy Apple, my opinion is still open, but what I do know, when companies try and sell to mass consumer, a product that uses the same old standard software that been used by everyone, because it is a habit, that product is general not always sucessful.

iPad does not support Flash because Flash is now/yesteryear, many people do not enjoy Flash because of pops-up ads etc., and Apple are looking to provide a product that is for the future.

Do you see USB suppport in future or do you see wireless connection to other components being used more and more. Apple are trying to influence the consumer and provide a more efficent way of undertaking day to day tasks.

Also why buy a iPad with USB ports, why not just hook onto your main computer? Surveies show many Apple buying consumers have 2-3 computers in their homes. Why duplicate effort, when you trying to provide a product that better than smartphone in terms of viewable, but not a duplicate to laptop (can anyone say netbook).

I personally think that iPad will be the next laptop computer once the technology gets smaller and we will be able to do many of our tasks from this device. I opinion is out, since I want to how the software develops for the iPad, little disappointed at common, you can use 140,000 apps from Apple store, since expect the apps to much better for iPad then iPhone. BUT saying that I will wiat to see what comes out.

You think 'now', netbooks, flash, etc. I look to the product which proppels me into the future.

P.S. you need to know difference between name calling and giving an opinion on your replies. If you review a lot of your replies seen troll-like in nature.

I think you miss the point, people on this site may not like Flash and enjoy theiPad because it does not support FLASH . The people who think iPad is going to fail due to the lack of FLASH are the ones pushing the agrument with concern to flash. Flash would not have been in the iscussion, if it was not for the Apple haters.

So what don't you read all comments before replying to one person's opinion.

Microsoft and Nokia are just a bit sore. MS would do good to learn from the iPad and Nokia would do good to withdraw from the US market. :P

    Nokia, maybe. Even likely.

Microsoft... nah. They just had the best quarter in their history, pocketing (quote from anandtech.com) "a net revenue of $19.02B USD. a 14 percent increase from the previous year. Microsoft also reported operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share of $8.51B USD, $6.66B USD and $0.74 USD per share, up 43 percent, 60 percent and 57 percent, respectively from a year ago. The revenue was boosted by $1.71B USD in deferred revenue on Windows 7 preorders, among other things.

The key factors in Microsoft's rejuvenation were Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Since October 22, Microsoft sold 60 million Windows 7 licenses, the fastest sales pace of any operating system in Microsoft history -- or world history for that matter.
    "

So they don't really have much reason to be sore, but if they can poke at Apple, they'll do it anyway. Because they can. It is not like MS started a trend of poking at other side, when you think of it.

The only one I kind of agree with is the criticism from Brandon Watson. Apple is wrong for locking the platform so tightly. And sadly, it is looking increasingly like Microsoft is the more open company going forward. That's really disappointing.

The iPad has so much potential if they will allow all apps on there. It's one thing for Apple to screen for system compatibility. It's another for them to screen out apps simply because they compete with an Apple function.

That may not have been a big deal on an iPhone. But on a mobile computing platform, that's a handicap for sure.

Actually, it's Flash that is helping keep the internet "closed" as it is a proprietary standard. Apple is, and has been for a long time, pushing for a more open internet. That's why they support open standards like Html5 and mp4 instead of proprietary ones including Flash, Silverlight, WMA and WMV etc.

Anyway, Apple keeps getting hammered about improving security. What better start than getting rid of Flash.

Well, since you resurrected the topic of flash on this thread, I'll take that as an invitation..

My head's swimming from all the iPad bashing that's been going on this week. Flash seems to be one of the salient points of discussion. Some have alluded to the notion that flash is omitted from iPhone and iPod Touch (and now iPad) because of performance issues, and Adobe's inability (or reluctance) to fix those issues. Others might argue that it's Apple's responsibility to address the performance issues, or their fault that they haven't been fixed.

I believe it's now a moot point. It's no longer an issue of addressing flash's poor performance on the Mac/iPhone OS. That ship has sailed. The situation now is that Apple is trying to kill flash as a relevant internet protocol, and I believe they will succeed. Apple is selling millions of web surfing products every quarter that don't do flash. That number is about to increase, and substantially I think.

This is a giant pissing contest between Apple and Adobe, and I personally support Apple in their quest. Some of you might disagree, and that's all well and good. I support open internet standards, and flash isn't one.

As to why all the flash hatred here? That's easy. Flash is a dog on the Mac, and always has been. This is first and foremost an Apple centric website, and we Mac users have been relegated to second class citizenship by Adobe for a long, long time. And we're tired of it. Adobe might not have found themselves in this predicament if they had cleaned up the flash on Mac situation long ago, but they didn't. They gambled that Apple wouldn't regain a position of relevance in the industry, and they chose poorly. And now they will pay for it.

Nice to see these big companies getting so worried. Not too long ago, there would have been a shrug of proverbial shoulders and a comment along the lines of "well, they're a tiny company - whatever".

I think people know that the iPad, particularly in it's next iteration is going to be massive. Not that v.1 won't sell millions.

as if Flash and Silverlight aren't proprietary.

There is the matter of no widely supported tool for seamlessly creating HTML 5 content. Three years after the iPhone I've thought Apple might develop such and make it open source like Java where they could still shepherd it and make sure it remains compatible with their eco-system even while allowing full access and code contributions from elsewhere.

It would accrue to their bottom line in perfect support of all major audio-video content, and Apple has learned a lot about participating in open source while being seen as a pretty white hat even as their code contributions help their own products, not least the kernel of OS X in recent years.

I'll just plug the USB stick in, drag the files to the desktop... oh hang on...

I'm sorry - have you seen this in action and know how it works yet - "non industry standard" USB connector is simply nonsense. It has a USB connector, that provides a standard USB socket. HOw the file transfer will work is anybodys guess. You're criticising the unknown.

Two of the most popular sites in the world rendered utterly useless. So they go to Facebook. They see pretty much all their friends playing farmville, poker, and many other facebook apps. They want to play too. Ooops, flash required again!

Flash isn't required for the iPlayer, the BBC provide a non-flash alternative. Hulu will follow very soon, especially when this becomes a revenue stream fro them. How exactly would you play farmville without the ability to distinguish between rollover, click and right click? How could any touchscreen device do this - not just the iPad?

Another message comes in, so they quit again, load IM again, and repeat. Pretty soon that gets awfully tiring.

NO, they don't quit safari, they switch applications (instantly) to read/reply to the message then flip back to Safari which is exactly as they left it, while leaving their music playing in the background.

No skype on the iPad? really - what's your source for that. I've just been reading about Skype's plans to launch an app specifically for it, maybe you'd care to look at the Skype web site?

You do talk some nonsense. What's next "you can't play games on a mac, mac doesn't run microsoft office?" Myths beginning all over again.

I love that people are grasping at straws to criticise this device. No flash? Well no device at this level has it, and those smartphones that do barely function. My wonderful new google phone has flash (well, flash lite, but that's all any smartphone has) and it doesn't work. What's the point in implementing a technology that doesn't work? That is for Adobe to fix, not Apple.

No camera? I'm pretty sure that this will make an appearance in the future, but I don't want a camera looking up my nose when I'm holding this thing in my hands. Think about the ergonomics, think about the reality of 3G video chat.

This thing also doesn't have an onboard SD slot or USB port. But already there are devices that allow this functionality.

Quit your whining. This is version one. It does what it says it will do. Flash is not a 'majority' of web content. It's a majority of porn and adverts. Responsible content publishers should be providing alternative content as a matter of basic working practise. iPlayer is doing it, Youtube is doing it - THe NY Times will be doing it. The industry will have to follow.

Other manufacturers will soon be producing their "iPad Killers", but until flash is reworked for the ground up, any flash content is going to be badly flawed, even if you can see it. The lack of flash is an issue, but not one that Apple can sort unless Flash is made open source.

I can think of a great many programs that run like crap on the mac. It's not apple's job to fix those either.

So no camera, no flash = A Fail?

    I think not.

This is not a netbook replacement, it is not a laptop replacement, it is not a desktop replacement. Why can't some people be intelligent enough to understand a new product category. Jeez some people are dumb. My 63 year old mother gets it (and will be getting one as her first piece of net/email technology), so why can't you?

A bit like the Wii? That name was a joke in the UK (Wee being colloquial for urine, not sure if that applies in other countries), but now children have stopped using the term "wee", it's redefining the language. Once most people stop saying the "i" and just refer to it as the 'pad' it will be cool. People refer to their mac, not their iMac, so I guess the same will happen.
