Snow leopard upgrade has caused Vmware issues

I just upgraded my macbook to Snow leopard. I was running 10.4.11. I was also using Vmware 2.0.6 and running xp SP3 on it. Since the upgrade to Snow Leopard Vmware opens up but gives me this message.

VMware Fusion cannot connect to the virtual machine.

Make sure you have rights to run the program and to access all directories it uses and rights to access all directories for temporary files.

I have gone to VMware's site and uninstalled all vmware and extra files they list and reinstalled 3 times to no avail. I have gone in to each file and made sure that I had read and write permissions on each. I have gone into accounts and make sure I was an administrator and had permission to do this. I have run disk utility after each uninstall and install. I am out of options.

I am a Pc who has come over to the mac side. I have been using this computer and Vmware for 1 year with no problems. I am a tech coordinator at a small school and need to work on both mac and windows servers so I need my Vmware back. Any help would be appreciated. Still learning the ways of the Mac but I love it.

Thanks

Are you using a legitimate copy of XP?

Is 2.0.6 the beta release? Have you thought of upgrading to VM3?
  • Reply 4 of 14
my thought was that 2.0.6 was an update that fixed many issues that vmware had with snow leopard. I did the exact same upgrade on another mac at school and it works fine. Both computers are identical. Same setups and software. We did not have it in our budget to upgrade to 3.0 but if I knew it would fix the problem I would buy it. I don't want to buy it and it not work.

Try manually initializing the kernel extensions by doing the following:

open the terminal app in the utilities folder

    type:

    cd /Library/Application\\ Support/VMware\\ Fusion/

    hit return. Then type:

    sudo ./boot.sh --start

hit return and type in your password. If it can't load the kexts, they are likely incompatible with your OS and you'll have to update to a new version of VMWare. Also check if you are in 64-bit or 32-bit mode in Snow Leopard in your system profiler overview (Apple menu > about this Mac > more info), if it says 64-bit, you may need to go back to 32-bit.

No receipt for 'com.vmware.fusion.application' found at '/'.

Internet Software Consortium DHCP Server 2.0

I went to the library/receipt file and they are all there. I will do some research on this while I wait for a reply. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

What version of 10.6 Snow Leopard do you have? Some people have mentioned upgrading to 10.6.2 fixed some VMWare issues.
  • Reply 9 of 14
I am running 10.6.2. I updated everything when I started to develop a problem hoping that it would fix it.
  • Reply 10 of 14
I have uninstalled 2.0.6 and installed 3.0.1 and have the same issue. I went and checked on some of the files and these files could not be found.

    #

    /Library/Receipts/VMware Fusion.pkg

    #

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.vmware.fusion.plist

    #

    ~/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion

    Any clues why?

Try running through the Disk Utility repair disk and repair permissions functions.
  • Reply 12 of 14
I ran the disk utility again with the same result. Same error as above. I tried contacting VMware but they will only help if you pay for support. I guess I will have to bite the bullet. Thanks. I will let you all know what it was.

Was this issue ever resolved. I'm now having the exact same issue with OSX 10.6.8 and VMWare Fusion 3.1.3. I have already tried everything mentioned on this thread.

I'd venture that you're having a completely different problem as you're using neither the same OS nor the same version of VMWare.
