Mets should trade Alfonzo
Since the only reason Edgardo Alfonzo doesn't want to move back to third base is because it may hurt his free agent chances at the end of the year I say its time for the Mets to trade him.
Colorado is about to trade third baseman Jeff Cirillo for just a relief pitcher, how about give them Alfonzo, Todd Zeile, and relief pitcher Rick White for Cirillo? Then the Mets can sign Tino Martinez to a 3 yr deal to replace Zeile. Why doesn't Phillips come up with these great ideas?
How about Alfonso, Rick White, Zeile, and any or all of their outfielders except Cedeno for Troy Glaus and Darrin Erstad?
I hope the Mets remain active because they still need more offense........................................... ..

After dealing Justice to Oakland, they're obviously gunning for Juan Gonzalez, so signing Tino would only suck money away from that goal. Zeile is an excellent fielding first baseman (that infield is gonna be the best fielding we've seen in a long time, anywhere), and with Gonzalez they woudn't need to upgrade production at first base so badly.
What they do need is a new closer. I'm sure they could get someone decent for Benitez, Payton, and Agbayani.
If the Mets could get rid of Todd Zeile and sign Tino Martinez they would. Since Zeile had surgery this offseason no one will want him until they see how he is in Spring Training.
Unfortunately, if the Mets don't get rid of Benitez they won't win it all. Yeah he had 43 saves last year, but if wasn't for him the Mets could've truely made a run at the division title late in the season. They really should trade Benitez, Payton, and possibly Agbayani.
Anyway, I agree it would be a mistake to trade Alfonzo unless he is truly unhappy. I do not think the Angels would give up Glaus either for that package---just not enough.
If the Mets truly want to trade for someone, go for Nevin. Problem is, the Mets don;t have much in ther farm system that I can think of offthe top of my head. Any deal with SD would have to start with Pat Strange and Jay Payton. That would give them an OF of Trammel, Payton and Kotsay, and Kleko would go to first and Burroughs would take over for Nevin. I do not think they would want Alfonzo as they already have Jiminez, Jackson, and the guy they just got from Seattle. You might want to look to Texas as well. They are stocked at 3B with Blalock, Lamb and Texiera...again I do not know what you could give up, but I would guess Pat Strange and Grant Roberts to start with.

I can't see them getting rid of Grant Roberts now that they got rid of Jerrod Riggan. The bullpen needs all they guys possible at the moment.
In the end, the Yankees will win it all anyway, so dies it matter if you finish 1st or last anyway???
I was hoping they'd hold on to Shinjo. He really impressed me last year: good bat, good glove, good hustle - sort of like a mini-Ichiro.

I was hoping they'd hold on to Shinjo too. Besides for Piazza, Shinjo was my favorite last season. He came through for them so many times. He was an all around good outfielder. Hopefully now we'll get Juan Gonzalez and make it to the World Series like Robbie Alomar guaranteed if they got Gonzalez.

I'd love to see them trade him for Nevin, but i don't think San Diego would trade him.
Now that Cirillo is gone, how about Fonzie for Scott Rolen? The Phillies are looking to trade him.
I believe Phillips got Estes to make one of the other starters available for trade. I'm hoping he's going to package Fonzie, maybe Rusch, and one of their outfielders like Payton for a third baseman. Then they could sign Gonzalas. I too liked Shinjo, but lets face it he is a mediocre ballplayer as a starter........................................... .....

Good idea.
Now they traded Tsyoshi Shinjo and Desi Relaford to the Giants for Shawn Estes. The rotation is starting to look better.

What's so bad about him?

ok, as one of the biggest Giants fans there is, ive seen this guy since he came up. he was incredible his first full year--i saw his 2 hitter versus the astros here in houston--awesome performance. but ever since then, hes been very erratic. just when u think hes showing the brilliance everyone thinks hes capable of, he gets a mental freeze. the guys a headcase. hes got all the talent, but his heads not screwed on right. hes very emotional and thinks hes the best thing to come out of baseball since babe ruth--hes even arrogant over barry bonds...
so simply put--watch this guy like a hawk. watch his ups and downs. he'll show brilliance. but he'll also go through those times where it looks like he has no f***ing clue where he is (literally).
good luck w/ him (it seems only the giants have noticed his erratic behavior and performances, cause every other team thinks hes an ace...)
either way, i cant wait til next season--go shawn, and go Giants
