    If H.264 was an open format, it would be done by now. Currently open formats tend to be inferior and that holds back adoption. I don't think the license fees can be all that bad when you get cheap video cameras supporting the format and licensing the tech from MPEG LA.



    The FSF always complain about things that aren't free as in costs no money but people need to be paid for their work. Proponents don't expect hardware to be free - they quite happily purchase either an AMD or Intel machine, despite the fact those two companies monopolize the industry. But when it's to do with software, it has to be open and free.



    Firefox can't play back H.264 because the developers choose not to. They refuse to pay the license for H.264 and they refuse to use system-level decoders over their own (they would have to include Quicktime with the download to ensure compatibility and even that doesn't help Linux users).
