....which of course anything thinking person realizes is the case, regardless of banning apps or not...

I am highly familiar with the process.

And have an American account which I got with a US gift card I got a couple of years ago to buy radio apps. Unfortunately, most don't work in Canada.6

Well, yes and no. Refusing to sell stuff in your store is fine, as long as you're not the only store in town, and you don't have the ability to stop consumers from going to other stores, and take constant measures to prevent those who manage to slip out to another store somehow, and take steps to ban store owners from another store from selling wares in your store.

It's like the old company stores in the mining towns of the 19th century.

I've got no problem if Apple wants to block specific apps from its store, as long as Apple doesn't block me from going to get those apps someplace else. Until they let me jailbreak without risk, or get apps from some other place but the App Store, i have a real issue, as a consumer, with their business plan and my future with them. I can live with an adult or explicit section of the store, but we still have the issue of various apps like Google Voice and many others being blocked.

I'm one of those who has moved on to Android - the Nexus One is better hardware, no lock down crap, and believe it or not, Android is much more Mac-like in my opinion than the iPhone is. Strange.

Isn't the reason the App Store is so hot because Safari apps just aren't the same as stand-alone apps? You'll recall Apple's original stance on apps was that Safari was all you'd ever need. Billions of downloads and 150,000 apps later, maybe that stance wasn't correct after all.

The one bikini-like app I ever got a hold of would not have been nearly as pleasant experience in Safari as it is in its own stand-alone environment.

I don't think this is specifically for boob apps or bikini pics. It's probably more of a catch-all category for explicit content (i.e. fowl language, dirty jokes...) Boob apps will probably be lumped into that category. I doubt there will ever be any porn apps approved.

    No it's not.

When something is removed because it is obtectionable it is censorship.

Simply removing something is not censorship. If an article is published with incorrect data and then changed or the article was removed, it was not censored. It was corrected or deleted.

Yeah, though I suspect that probably they will be required to start putting their swimwear on a mannequin or something.

So has the category been created and implemented or was it removed?

Freedom is really important to me personally and I always find it ironic how many Americans argue in favour of these kinds of things given the reputation of the USA vis a vis "freedom." IMO the USA talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk when it comes to individual freedom. If you want to be free, you're better off living in Europe or South America.

I find it difficult to waste my energy with a rebuttal except to say that you are trying to make a thousand shades of grey, black or white. Understand that I am free, only so long as your freedom doesn't impinge upon mine. Not a realistic model for the intellectual construct of "freedom". History serves to remind us that none of us have ever been free, short of ostracizing ourselves from civilization.

Further, the notion that America is somehow a totalitarian state and the UK isn't is absurd. Even worse you are insinuating that Americans are incapable of measuring relativistic freedom. Your opinion personifies absurdity and ignorance. The Brits practically pioneered "nation building", imperialism and enslavement. You are simply off your rocker and should re-educate yourself in history.

Offensive is offensive. So the swimwear store who got their apped pulled because of bikini models showcasing product, got pulled because they are not an established brand is total BS. At least they are trying to create a section but that retail app shouldn't be in that section. These bible thumpers who keep complaining are so annoying. Whatever happened to freedom and free speech. Right to express oneself. Funny thing though it's these same people who molest kids, commit adultery and other questionable things. I say shut up and leave people alone. Be better parents stop having others do your job. If you can't manage your kids then you should not have had them. Stop making it everyone else's problem. Clearly this group is vocal and yields power but it is up to us all to drown their voices out with our own.

The swimwear app was reinstated. You can take a breath now.

The iPad is targeted at schools, hospitals and as a new media reader. Apple also has other countries it is trying to sell to.

Everyone in the US can find other ways to access all the naughtiness they want -- so the "walled garden" isn't that restrictive. As some point out -- you can just go on the web.

But once you put an iPad on a wireless network that prevents you from going to IP addresses not on a whitelist -- it gets more difficult. Likely, the iPad will also allow the appstore to restrict itself to PG13 and below.

I don't think it was intended as Apple being a big brother -- it is intended to ALLOW for corporate and school policies where THEY want to be Big Brother.

I wonder how this will affect Australia where "R-rated" games are banned, due to various Governments having to appease various religious nutters in order to cling to power.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Unfortunately Apple is just as much in thrall to these nutters who profess to know what is best for us and so have to make efforts to respond to "complaints".

To do otherwise doesn't make much sense.

    Yay.

Boot out several thousand apps. Then create a category for them.

Abso-effing-lutely brilliant. If I didn't know better I'd say Steve Ballmer was running Apple.
