Yet they announced the launch date and didn't "notify" me, and now it's going on sale in a matter of hours and they didn't "notify" me. Apple is such a screw up company lately when it comes to public relations.
I got my email at 6:30 am ... good thing, too, because I planned to order one today but would have forgotten. I just ordered the wi-fi model, to test my iPhone apps, but I'm also curious to play with it around the house and see if it changes any of my computing routines.
You think its better to be able to turn the accelerometer on and off quickly, or MUTE the device?
You can bet Apple did a ton of focus group studies and needed to have a solution for unwanted rotation based on how people interacted with the device. I can think a a few scenarios where it would be annoying to have to stop an activity such as reading a book or IM to go to settings. I think it was probably a decision arrived at after extensive real world testing.

If the question is, "Whether or not to include optional Screen Lock feature on iPad/future iPhones," the answer is a resounding YES!!!! And thank you very much! We don't need a focus group to tell us what a pain the auto rotation is in the iPod app, and many others.
When the question is, "Do we replace the Mute switch with a physical switch for this feature."

Agreed. It seems as though, given all the effort & design that went into the iPad, the fix-rotation capability is a feature that was missed. I would have thought that some kind of press & hold (as used for copy paste) could have been used to fix rotation, and keep that button as mute.
Just so many many times that mute button is very important, and that technique goes back even to treo (Palm)
You can see what? You think its better to be able to turn the accelerometer on and off quickly, or MUTE the device?
I don't see how that's much of a comparison.
I can see either way being useful. I don't see why it's necessarily so much worse one way over another, it depends on your usage patterns. On my iPhone, I've even mashed in some silicone to keep the phone from inadvertently going silent, because it's way too easy to switch it either way with a pretty light brushing touch. If I need it to be quiet, I hold the volume "down" for a few seconds or unplug the headphones. But if I'm laying on my side, I don't want it to be shifting orientation on me.

Either way, Apple should copy SBSettings and create a popover accessible by touching the iPad logo in the upper left corner that gives you access to settings toggles.
I hadn't heard of that program before, it looks nifty. I tend to change the brightness pretty often too, the stock "auto" feature isn't very good.
forget that ebays charges like 10% and paypal takes a cut too???
It's not great, but it's not quite that bad either.
I usually figure the total is 10% or less, including PayPal transaction fee. The transactions fee aren't too different than what you would have to pay in merchant fees if you accepted MasterCard or Visa directly.
The listing fee is $4 for starting bids $500 and up. It goes down to $1 if you start at $49.99. Final value fee for $1000 would be $36.31, bringing your total to about 4%. The PayPal fee seems to be roughly 4% on large transactions, I found a total PayPal fee of 4% on a large payment that crosses national borders and changed currencies.

good advice... now I just need $1k.
Yeah, figures.....
They notified me this morning at 9:37am ET. Only one hour past the official pre-order time.
Mine came at 6:34 AM PST, three minute before you. Nyah, nyah, nyah!
I officially became an early adopter two hours later. No problems with the Apple Store being too busy.
I hope nobody paid $12 extra for expedited shipping.

That worked well when the iphone first came out, limited supply and high demand created stupidly high prices on ebay.
I don't see why that would happen with the ipad. Maybe if you advertised it as "unlocked", people might bid over list.

In short, plan on fees totaling about 8%.
