I can see foreign language apps being pretty big. Not just a book, but a real interactive learning tool.

Exactly. And not only that, productivity apps, i.e. apps where the user can produce stuff usually take months to produce.

Thank god developers like the Omni Group don't agree with you.

There is nothing special keeping the iPad from being more than a consumption device. Well, other than being able to have a minimal imagination

You can't ignore a moaner. A moaner ruins the thread, it's better to address him. I don't think calling him a troll is best approach though. It seems TS wants Apple to make a notebook computer. Now if only they actually did that…. (APPARENTLY SOME PEOPLE MISSED THE SARCASM HERE)

It doesn't matter if the iPad sells 100,000,000 units, it'll only give him more reason to complain. If it doesn't sell well he'll say I told you people wanted a "real device", and it if does he'll say: "people are stupid". It's not about winning with him, it's about being never wrong and wanting it all his way. But most of all it's about him giving out, being negative and moaning.

The iPad isn't what I wanted initially, but I like the device it's turning into. I like the fact that it's so small, thin and light and has a standby time of around 30 days. So you can use it for quick tasks at home on the couch. And I like how its design tends to make it a far more casual computer than we're used to. Comfortable for sitting around using. Less computer-like. Most of all I like how fast it is at what it does. It's FAST.

Reading, web browsing and getting information with large images and video FAST. If that's all the iPad did then it's a pretty cool device. I have a powerful desktop computer for doing intense huge amounts of work on anyway, this is a simple solution for simple tasks. It's new, so you can't fully grasp how it's going to play out, but you can definitely get a sense for how interesting a device it is.

to be truly useful, most of those productivity apps will need a bottoms up UI redo. rather than just scaling up, although that will work for now. so they will take a bit longer to have ready. then again. there's almost a week left. who knows what will turn up in the 22-23 hours.

Apple never claimed that the ipad was meant for 'serious computing'. that's just you with your head still 'in the sand'. get over it and don't buy one. period

and you'll find something to gripe about and declare it crap. it's a 2.6 not a 2.8 processor. they STILL are not putting enough ram in the machines. you can't take out the battery yourself. no matte finish, no blu-ray, blah blah.

I suspect that the 3% is readers. because at least for the ibooks app, the books are in app purchases. so they are talking about that app, perhaps a kindle for the ipad, independent etextbooks and emag etc.

well right now it won't fit in the cradles. but yes I would imagine they will do an ipad version just as they did an ipod touch at some point.

Since when has Apple been a business centered company? I really can't say exactly why Apple is not treated as a business platform. Perception is everything and Apple does not have this. Besides does the iPad really look like a serious tablet computer? Apple has never been considered that serious.

I digress. I reread your post. You didn't say business.

I will be getting an iPad. I am not a child. I will not be getting it for games. I will use it to read email, surf the web, read publications and do light word processing, while sitting on the couch, on my terrace or in bed . For heavy lifting, I will use my Mac Pro.

The iPad is not for everyone... yes, some people need to get a laptop. But there is no need to put down the iPad or any other hardware, just because it doesn't fit you needs.

It's never better to address him - unless you are an administrator you aren't accomplishing anything other than cluttering up threads with more drivel. Only administrators have power to address things - if you think you are addressing something by commenting on it your delusional and contributing to the problem.

the only power we, mere users, have is to ignore - and it's amazingly effective. He would dry up and blow away if he were to be summarily ignored. The problem is there are too many undisciplined people who think they are "addressing" things by calling him out (hint: your doing exactly what he's wanting!)

They do have a notebook - the new 13" macbook is far better than the majority of PC notebooks, and my MBP is a work of art. They don't have a sub notebook - I still would like a replacement for my PowerBook G4 12". But in rationally analyzing how I used my PB G4, the iPad will do all I used to use it for, and far more. While taking less space and having far greater battery life!

The problem with most complaints about the iPad are not the iPad, but the myopic perspective of many who criticize it. No s^#t it's not a full blown computer running a full blown OS - that's not the point of it. For the most part such discussions now are pretty fruitless (ha!). The proof in the pudding will be the next four to six months - it will be pretty obvious by then just what the iPad's potential is capable of. It's going to make the iPhone look like a science experiment. It's lacking the main thing the iPhone has - a minimum $70 a month charge for two years!

The iPad not a "serious" computing device?

That's strange. The industry is taking it *very* seriously.

It all depends where developers take it, and by the looks of it, this is the next generation of computing. You can deny it all you want, but the train's already left the station.

Well I don't know from 'serious' but how much you wanna bet the Apple iPad is going to be considered FAR more serious than Microsoft Surface.

Yea even with my somewhat negative spin I've taken on App Store policy... It's really hard to argue with that kind of extreme success.

Twenty five thousand... Heh, with todays App Store, Apple can ban almost much (they came close with the PORNectomy no?) without even thinking twice about it...

No its not. And most people even here agree with that fact except for you. Something with a 9.7" screen running a mobile OS with a 17.00 processor is not a serious device.
