I do not think this is generally the case. I put the Bolt browser on her BB, and surfing is not that bad. It is different than the iPhone, but it was not unbearable. Besides, my wife won't surf on my iPhone, and says she does not like the small screen.

But at a certain level, this is beside the point. The iPhone attracts a demographic that likes to surf the web, and do those types of activities more than users of other phones. As such, the iPhone is overrepresented on web statistics relative to its market share.

'Not unbearable' is probably not the criterion in relation to iPad v. competitors (as opposed to iPhone v. BB). All the currently planned iPad-like devices (HP, Google) seem like they will be 'equally bearable'.

True, but I was not talking about the iPad, I was responding to the issue of surfing on a BB.

If Apple manages to fix the disaster that is iWorks for iPad, I will certainly pick one up to replace the netbook I use when I travel for business because I dislike schlepping my 15" MBP.

So pretty much people that own blackberry's barely use the phone to surf the web, and only to make phone calls, that sounds just about right then. Seeing as how the iPhone has a much larger display than any blackberry I have seen to date.

What is this disaster you're referring to about iWork for iPad? I have iWork and have no problems on my iPad so far with the suite.

The people I know with BBs, make phone calls (and you have to admit the iPhone is a mediocre phone at best), email, calendars, contacts and all the rest. They just tend not to surf a whole lot - a quick google, mapquest, yelp, but not a huge amount.

This should not be overly surprising, given the BB started as a business phone.

Speaking as an AAPL shareholder, if that's what iPhone and iPad users want to do, that's perfectly fine by me.

If you're trying to say AT&T is not one of the best carriers out there, then I agree, but don't let it seem like the iPhone hardware is to blame for the spotty service, and yes, I have tried to surf on a blackberry, its quite horrid compared to my iPhone. And the iPhone so far for me has been far superior to any blackberry I have held in my hand. So I wonder why all of a sudden RIM is trying to make me too iPhone clone ripoffs?

I'd say it is interesting though! It simply reflects what a pain other devices are to use on the web compared to Apple products.

Pardon me for being blunt but what a moronic comment. I have been using mine almost 24/7 as we prepare to launch a new TV show and an associated web site. The iPad has been invaluable during this process since we got one for testing, research and communications. Why assume use of a web enabled device is limited by your lack of imagination! I look forward to having time to use it for leisure too in about 8 months when this project concludes.

I have a friend who lent me his iPad for a few hours. I transferred to the iPad a couple of Word files, a spreadsheet and a talk that I had, and opened them with the suite on the iPad. The powerpoint file was almost unrecognizable in terms of formatting, transitions, figures, and even slide order. The excel sheet went fine, and one of the word docs was also mangled.

So, i figured, ok, maybe it is something with Office (although the ads claim that they can be imported), so I imported the docs into iWorks on my MBP, and everything was fine (except that I lost my Endnote Citation codes, which I knew would happen - no big deal). But, the files were not altered at all.

Move them to iPad, and the same problems.

So, I created short iWorks files on my MBP, and the Keynote file was again mangled in terms of formatting. The Pages file went generally fine, although there were some changes to the formatting.

If you read the reviews of the apps at the iTunes store, I am not the only one with these problems. For a suite that was billed as the perfect companion to iWorks on Mac OSX, it just does not work the way it should.

Without a useable Productivity Suite, I cannot justify buying a large iTouch, especially since I already have an iPhone, iMac at home and my MBP as my main work computer.

I think you're the exception. Most of the people that I know use them to sit on the sofa and surf.

Why not take a poll of what everyone uses it for?

No one said anyone had to buy one. I did and I'm loving it. Used it for a client meeting other other day at a coffee shop and it was so much nicer than a laptop in that scenario. But ya... if you don't want one... don't buy one. That's cool.

p.s. it's called the iPod Touch

It's awesome for bedtime reading too.

So far I've used mind for surfing / emailing from the couch / bedroom as well as for airline travel (awesome) client meetings (just to show off my work and / or look at a website or send an email) and also for the occasional game (mostly puzzle games). This thing is simply amazing. I LOVE the form factor. So much nicer than lugging around a laptop just to watch a movie on a flight or meet with a client or whatever.

You mis-read. I DO want to buy one. However, I am not made of cash, and I have netbook that works fine, except that it is windows based. I need to be able to use the iPad to edit manuscripts, talks, and data sheets while I am at conferences. At least in my case, the current version of iWorks does not seem to do it that well.

    But that yields less information.

Laptops are mobile devices too, but I don't see those included in this comparison. As such, I would call these numbers cherry picking. Just by the fact that the iPad uses a screen with 4-6 times the screen area of just about any phone would suggest to me that a comparison to pocket-able phone devices just doesn't fit.
