just got back from my astronomy lab. damn, theres nothing more beautiful than seeing saturn through a telescope. the pure wonder and awe that went w/ viewing it on my own...theres nothing that can beat that. yeah, ive seen all the pictures taken professionally, but actually seeing it fer yerself is just amazing. oh, and seeing jupiter w/ its colored stripes and 4 moons aint too shabby either. damn i love that class. its worth sitting out there in the freezing cold. i would do that everyday if i could...

simply amazing.

its so much more satisfying to actually see it fer yerself. almost as if yer proving it to yerself, instead of taking someones word for it...

i dunno, but i can go to bed happy tonight. i am more sure of the world and universe around me now that ive seen something so awesome and amazing as the work of art that is our solar system.

    Oh jeez, a Uranus joke.

What's so funny about it to me is that the old way of pronouncing it is "your anus," but the new way you're supposed to pronounce it is "urine us." There's just no nice way to say that planet!

You knew it was going to happen sooner or later. As for pronunciations, how about

    "U - ran - us" ?

I agree btw, that there is nothing more awe-inspiring than seeing the things that "can't be seen." The Eagle Nebula, Saturn's rings -- all of those kinds of things. I can't wait until the HST gets an upgrade (this spring or next I think) that will significantly enhance the imagery it produces - and no more 3/4 imagery...that blank, fourth corner will be filled in after the upgrade. Wa hooo!

Then in 2010, the NGT will replace hubble, peering an order of magnitude deeper into space and presumably bringing us images of things we've never been able to see / prove the existence of before.

It's an exciting time in the world of physics and cosmology...I just wish I had the mathematical horsepower to understand some of the basic conepts behind quantum mechanics and the like. Guess I'll have to stick with basic physics, algebra and a vivid imagination!

I liked that Futurama episode where Fry says "Uranus" and the Professor says something like "We got sick of those jokes so we changed the name" "What's the new name" "Urectum".
