    Fake Steve Jobs.

"We had to deal with the fact that M. genitalium had an extremely slow growth rate"

Yeah, that's a nuisance when that happens \

Like all research, it'll probably be great once they do something practical with it. Right now, it's just blobs in a jar like millions of other blobs in jars all over the world.

Its fun to toy with things we don't understand. Hope it doesn't grow into something that is bad for human beings.

Is it just me, or do I get the sense that the rest of the world just panicked about a new super weapon?

Oh yes, the U.S. is back, screw with us now! Muhalalala!!

PZ Myers already has an interesting piece on reactions to this breakthrough.

Any technology like cloning or this new discovery will eventually make its way to the laboratory of rogue nations and mad men. You can scream muwahaha for a decade at best, but science is now in the realms of corporations and technology like the internet make communication easy. PZ Myers sounds like a fan boy defending the discovery and the ass lubed altar boys comment was uncalled for. Human beings are not mature enough to live in harmony. The potential for military use always outweighs the potential for good use.

It's access to enough natural resources that is the problem.

Got a over population problem in India right? Just like China?

The US scientists have a solution to your problem...all we need is a little provocation to justify your below average IQ population reduction to our citizens.

After we are done, you'll have another Japan living in balance with your natural resources. Long as you don't screw it up economically like they did.

(in jest of course, but I often speculate what could go through the minds of madmen to justify their actions)

or, for those who don't read, "Blade Runner."

I'd prefer, with the current human paradigm of learning being "put the fist into the fire in order to learn it's hot", to see this sort of work done off-planet.

Possible safety concerns aside, this event & what follows has the potential to create a quantum shift in our perception of ourselves in relation to Universe. Ideally & eventually, the majority of the planet will drop their divisive religious mania & absurd notions of "god" as "god" is currently understood.
