All depends on how you define competition. They are all in the fray at the moment to popularize their OS and gain marketshare (yes that matters, even if Apple fans don't want to admit it). It's like any other OS, format, etc. war. The winner gets a platform that makes them billion. The loser will be relegated to has-been status for a decade or two.

Whether Apple licenses its OS or not is irrelevant. It's in competition with Android and WinPho 7 and Blackberry OS and Symbian. Whoever gets the most market share will get a self-sustaining machine. They'll get the most developers to pump out the most apps, which in turn will get the most developsers, etc. And they'll get revenues out of that cycle. Or in Google's case by pushing ancillary technolgies which can generate revenue (Search, Mail, Maps, etc.).

I don't think so. Google will dominate Apple mobile devices in less than 2 years. Apple already lost the Iphone touch screen phone title when HTC Nexus One came out back in January 2010. By the end of this year, Android tablets will be available and people will want something that frees them from the Apple mind control.

Yes, please place your Google device out back on top of the pile labeled "iPod, iPhone Killers." Thanks for your contribution.

Red herring. Just because you have a monopoly doesn't mean you are going to be "tied up in legislative tape". Seriously, people need to stop fixating on this monopoly BS.

Or to quote "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Second, as much as people want to believe, it's not always Apple that comes up with something new and innovative.

They may not come up with individual new or innovative items, features or concepts but what they do consistently come up with is a way to provide an awesome experience while using their products.

And that, in and of itself, is new and innovative - no one else has begun to match them, and I think it's why they are a clear leader in the areas they enter.

When it comes to MP3 players, smart phones and now probably the tablet space (pretty new, will have to watch) the only company able to best Apple has been.... Apple when they obsolete the old version with their next new version.

No one else does that - not when they are a clear market leader. They tend to milk their successful products until the bitter end.

Why exactly does Apple need to be driven?

The competition can, will, and does give Apple something to better itself on. Google does come by and kick the bar a bit higher. Then Apple will follow suit. It's good for Apple, it's good for Google. Most importantly, it's good for us.

Nothing Google has done has driven Apple. By their own admission, the frantic pace of Android updates is because they are so far behind (Apple) that they have to catch up.

To state Apple needs to be driven implies there is someone capable of exceeding them and driving them. No one, not even Google with Android, has even gotten close to the overall Apple experience. And that's why I think you are going to see Android phones tank everywhere but on Verizon this quarter. Oooh, Android managed to outsell the iPhone in the quarter before it's annual product refresh. Very impressive...
