in 5th grade, we just had paper books. Now, they have modern marvels to access porn, movies and games, and facebook in the classroom. progress? why would kids need it?
Yup - 5th graders look at porn and watch movie in class. Their teacher probably does the same. Or maybe your imagination just went unchecked for a minute.

What a stupid comment! It's what you do with the tools that counts. Spot quiz: Is it guns that kill people, or is it people WITH guns?
iPads are going to be the new books, so they might as well get started now.
Yeah that's the kind of dreck repeated ad-nauseum by some members in this forum. It's like a little mini Apple advertisment that makes you vom a little at how cheesey and uneducated it sounds. Some people succumb *so* easily to the marketting that you've got to wonder if they posses any trace of independent thought and critical thinking.
Look buddy, the ipad is a novelty product, that most pundits predicted to be a marginal failure (and the rest just didn't understand its purpose, or claimed there was no purpose to it), yet it's selling like crazy, and people keep discovering different uses and potential for it everyday.
It's funny how most people who profess they are above marketing and reprimand others for taking the the apple bait, are they themselves far more misinformed. If these forums make you vomit, you might as well p. off, no reason for us cleaning up your mess now is there? "Independent thought" and "critical thinking" is defined as per agreeing to what you are saying of course. How ridiculous: that's my opinion, and any one who shares it is an independent thinker.
Some of you guys just can't stomach this can you, how apple brought on a product that is visionary, that NO ONE in the tec world was prepared to equal it or bring something with comparable functionality, and instead of it failing in an adverse financial market, it's a runaway success. Bitterness and envy ensue of course...
Apple is focusing on the future of computing, and these children are that future. Apple is smart to focus on them.
Apple is also smart to ignore the whining, pessimistic crybabies that troll these forums to spread all their fabricated FUD, fearing that their way of old and broken PC-paradigm is about to finally buckle from beneath them.
Way to go Apple. Not only is this good advertisement, it does show that you are listening to what consumers (and kids) want.
Please continue ignoring the whining trolls. Perhaps you can send all households a big padlock so the parents can keep them locked in their basements.
Really? I wonder what would happen to her heart if she saw a picture of children their age working a 14 hour shift to assemble iPads?

You are moron and a sycophant. You have no basis in what you are saying, just lies and provocation. Check out your gap clothes and nike shoes to see the real sweatshop manufacturers. FYI also, apple is the only manufacturer conducting research on foxconn for the suicide rate, sony, and all the other big dogs who manufacture there didn't give a damn. But low blows is the only route that's left for you guys, seeing as attacking the product on a merit basis is impossible. How utterly sad.
I suppose it could be considered unfair that just because these kids were photographed and someone sent the photo to Apple that they're getting free iPads -- the case can be made that if Apple was going to give away free iPads, they should have gone to the kids who needed them most or perhaps the kids who wrote the best essays about what they would do with the iPad or something of the sort.
Has anyone yet thought about whether these kids have computers that they can sync the iPads to? The iPads can't be used alone. (Back in the early CD-ROM days, my company would give away free CD-ROM-based database programs as door prizes at trade shows. But most of the librarians who won the prize didn't have and couldn't budget a CD-ROM drive. We would up having to give them a drive as well.)
As for all the hype, whether the excitement about the iPad is genuinely deserved or self-reinforcing hype, it doesn't really matter. I work for a software development company that serves large media clients and I have never witnessed anything like the excitement over this product. On "paper", there's no reason for the iPad to be exciting: it's primarily just a large iPod Touch. But something happened when it made the transition to the larger size with the enhanced OS functionality. It transformed into something else that is exciting. People who use it just love this thing. (And I say that as someone who does not own an iPad and has no short-term intention of purchasing one.) I think Apple found the gestalt of this product.
In fact, I think one of the big differences between Apple and the Wintel empire is that Apple's products are more than the sum of their parts and Microsoft's (and other Wintel products) are generally less than the sum of their parts.
i've been posting about the educational value of the iPad for months prior to the launch. I'm pleased to see Apple is doing something good with this device (finally) instead of just marketing it to the entertainment industry.
The only things about this that kind of chaps my butt are...
First, it's too expensive for school kids. At $500, minimum, plus the cost of school books and supplies? This should be a device for the masses. Less expensive, adaptable to any book format, etc.. Just not practical, unless...
Second, it's not a standalone device. If it were, i could totally see this as a K-12 computer replacement (that could be subsidized). Kids really don't need a computer. The iPad has all the productivity tools they need to handle school.
Third, there's no way to keep these kids on-topic in class if they have one. Perhaps they could make an "iPad-Educational Edition" so that there is some regulation to who kids use the device once in class? I don't know, just seems like it would be a distraction.
What they really need to do is make a dumb-down version for school use only, and have the schools provide them in class and are stored in class. That's just one idea, i'm sure the Apple Genius' are coming up with options for that.
Actually, what they could do is just get a Kindle. That really has everything they would need for educational purposes.

Do you realize that most schools by a laptop for every child these days? At this grade level it is likely to be a Mac. If an iPad is able to replace or limit the number of Macs/PCs needed then they are saving $500 per student. For budget constrained schools out there, they may be able to actually afford something they can easily administer without dedicated IT staff once wireless application deployment arrives later this year.
It is standalone in this case. They could use one computer per classroom, but a school would use the enterprise features of the device, so it doesn't need to be associated with a computer.
I don't get your distraction argument. They could be distracted by a window. Should we remove all natural light from the classrooms? The fact that only one app can be on the screen at a time should prove to be less distracting.
There is going to be more educational software then we have seen in years with the AppStore. Apple needs to add enterprise licensing to the AppStore to make this work better in a school. Supplies will probably be too constrained for much school adoption until next year, but this makes perfect sense for many schools.
The kindle doesn't have a word processor, etc. If you have ever tried to use a Kindle as a text book, you will realize it is a bad idea. You can't flip through it quickly like a normal book. The kindle is really only good for novels.
If I'm a kid who gets a free iPad, I could care less what the motive is. On that note, if I'm an adult who knows better and I get a free iPad, I still could care less what the motive is.
Exactly!!! I have shown extreme excitement in an Apple store over the 27 iMac and have never gotten one for free! lol :-) And if they wanted to give me an iPad no matter what the motive was i would say "thank you so much!" and be very happy!!!!
Maybe they are not excited about the iPad in the photo, maybe they are excited at the porn they are looking at on the iPad. That would explain the excitement in the photo.
You reveal too much of your own focus, here. Do not think that every child has you as their model.

Porn? On an iPad? I thought all porn sites delivered their content in Flash these days..

Wow, buzzkill much? Jesus settle down. Who says anything about porn? If they are smart enough to get it on the iPad, TRUST ME they are getting it at home too along with facebook, movies, and games. I'm sure the schools will have some sort of restrictions in place. What a dumbass

Oh get the hell over it! FYI my shortsighted idiot, Apple has stepped up to investigate the problems at Foxconn and is taking action. Have any of the other companies that they manufacture stuff for done so? I doubt it. Now run along and go hug a tree or something...you bleeding hearts make me want to hurl chunks
Perhaps they could make an "iPad-Educational Edition" so that there is some regulation to who kids use the device once in class? I don't know, just seems like it would be a distraction.
They already do. It's called an iPad with Parental Controls turned on.
I think this is great for the kids and I have said all along, the iPad is going to be a game changer whether people like it or not. Education, medical, music, we're only at the very tip of the iceberg folks. Just wait until the apps start rushing in to take advantage of this new medium. Ever notice how you don't hear all the little whiney cry babies who predicted the iPads downfall? "It's a bomb. It won't sell sh*t"....where are they now? LOSERS

I was just about to post the same thing.

So that's why it is taking my iPad three weeks to arrive!
My mom won a free iPad from a TV station. She has to wait for it to arrive because it is backordered too.
