Masturbation

mas·tur·ba·tion

n.

Excitation of one's own or another's genital organs, usually to orgasm, by manual contact or means other than sexual intercourse.

It amazes me that in the year 2002 maturbation still remains a taboo subject. I mean, we all do it! Men, Women, Boys, Girls, Animals(?).

Or maybe it's just me...

Discuss. Or would you rather just let the subject pass and pretend it doesn't exist??

What is there to discuss. As you pointed out yourself we all do it. And I might even say that do it pretty well

No, I want to discuss why it is such a taboo subject even these days.

I think it's a taboo subject, because it's done in private. If you got caught in the act, you'd probably stop immediately. It's similar in that way to intercourse. Not quite as private being that two are involved, but the rest applies. And, of course, historical mores relating to sexual activity has a big role in the secretive nature of, um, you know...

You'd stop in the middle of a shag just because someone walked in? I don't think I could or would want to.

Kudos to jamiemarshall for starting a thread about this. I've been wondering for a long time when someone would. Frankly, I didn't have the guts to.

Thanks CosmoNut. I was discussing the topic with some friends the other night and it turned out to be quite an interesting discussion.

Someone who my friend works with is 23 and she claims never to have maturbated!! She must be a liar. If not I feel very very sorry for her!

Many many women don't masturbate, it is very likely that that particular girl has never masturbated.

Guys do, all of them do it all the time.

    We're stimulated differently.

Men are aroused by pictures, thoughts, touch, sounds, smells, tastes and seductively shaped household appliances (essentially anything).

Women are aroused by closeness and touch, and that's about it (there are exceptions, but that's the rule).

    I will play devils advocate:

Masturbation is a complex issue: manypeople do it but some don't.

I knew a fellow who didn't masturbate. It was part of his religion not to. NOT because it is immoral, but because his religion is actually a spiritual technique of channelling sexual forces. Basically he was a Tantrika, born and raised.

Tantrism is the belief that you are as spiritual as your energy is channeled, channeled through proper means to bring about focus. They do this through exercises and meditation. The energy (which is an unfortunate word when talking about this stuff) is used towards hightening awareness and not towards releasng tensions and reinforcing imaginary images that accompany orgasm (such as those in porn)

Just think, what do you want to do when your done jacking off: usually its go to sleep. Obviously some energy has been used up. Hold that energy in and most of us would go bonkers !!. . . unless.... we had a technique of channeling that energy towards awareness.

Many American psychologists also think this way: namely that we have a fixation on the Orgasm, and, have thereby reduced the natural pleasures of the rest of our bodies and lives, peasures that are tantamount to awarenesses. For these thinkers the outcome of such a uni-focused vision has profound cultural and social demensions: (look at my other posts in the Berkeley thread about sex's relation to terrorism, I really believe the sexuality of a culture says alot about that culture)

Anyway, for many who masturbate, I think that they should feel less taboo ridden in relation to it. For others, they should feel more responsible for the seriousness of what sexuality is and maybe think about other meanings of sexual energy than merely getting off.

There are other aspects of jacking which I find annoying, expecially when accompanyed by pornography, namely that it reinforces the replacement of the real or our own imagination with a library of images given from outside ourselves: meaning, that our imaginations become atrophied because, where they really are important, our imaginations get lazy and we no longer know how to clear them of what they get habituated to accompanying the sex act with.

and imaginations are important in or sexuality because that is where we intimately relate to ourselves in the deepest of ways: both sex and the imagination

even Nietzsche says as much " a man's sexuality reaches into the highest parts of themselves" (paraphrase)

Freud said that there are never only two people in bed, but four. He understood that we need the imagination in sex (his theory of fetishes is about how we deal with sexuality which in its power threatens to derail the Ego. with a fetish we focus the mind elswhere so the body can complete the act) But today with the ubiquitousness, and aesthetic excellence, of all sorts of porn, there are not only four in bed, but hundreds.

    anyway.

Jacking off also can be a serious waste of time.

I have found that relationships are more trouble than their worth... (just kidding...)

If someone asked me a year ago I would have denied ever doing it...

    Now I couldnt care less...

But I think the cultural taboo is lifting slowly...

I have watched alot of TV (which is the mainstay of the american family nowadays) comedies both on Prime-Time network television and HBO-type channels... lately that discuss this issue of masterbation being a taboo... in some very explicate and between the lines ways...

I think this is good and comedy is a good medium to do it in...

I read the results of a survey once that suggested the most common reason for masturbating was boredom. A large number of people apparently masturbate at work for that reason. I remember the morning after I read it, I was seeing my friends at work in a very different light.

I don't doubt it. Reminds me of that guy from Office Space...the Stapler guy...you just know there's one in every office, off in some corner spanking the proverbial monkey.

Which is as good a use for this thread as any - everyone, post the funniest name for masturbation you can think of

Like "Cookin' the Tube Steak" for instance.

Or from American Beauty, "Chokin' the Bishop"
