I realize that Apple owns the media but I have to disagree with the notion that they have it "figured out fot he next several years".The IPhone is losing market share rather than gaining, while Android is gaining several times more new customers than Apple is losing. During the 3 weeks since the Iphone 4 was released Apple sold about 3 million of them (according to Apple) but 77% of these buyers were previous IPhone users. During that sime time frame Android phones were sold to more than 3 million users, about 90% of which were new users. Put those stats together and see a very different picture than the one Apple is painting in public. In private the people at Apple are seeing their market share slipping away in much the same way that Mac sales whithered under the pressure from open systems (Windows now has 92+% of the PC market). The net of Android vs. Iphone sales since the release of IPhone 4 are that Android gained more than 3 times as many new users as Apple, and that number is accelerating rather than leveling off. I would expect that within several months there will be more Android users than IPhone users and within a year or two there will be more Android users than any other Phone OS.
It's hard to believe that anyone who's been around for 30 years would think that Apple "owns the media." It's only in recent years that the media hasn't collectively predicted failure for every product that Apple sells and the company as well. Even now, they are expected to blast a home run at every at-bat or be seen to have failed, and when they hit a pebble in the road, it's portrayed often as a potentially insurmountable boulder. I think Apple's media coverage has finally approached something near neutrality, as opposed to wholly negative, as it was not so very long ago.
Also, I think it should be understood that the game being played here is not about market share, but profit, and the growth of profit.
Like Apple can't find another plant to get these iPhones manufactured?! I'm loosing my faith in Apple as it clearly doesn't learn form past mistakes with the rollout of iPhones. They know the demand is huge so why don't they just meet up to the demand. I wouldn't like to have manufacturers that can't meet my demands!
It sounds so not Apple to not have full control over this situation!
Can you imagine what it would do for the economy if Apple started to actually build products here? If the second largest US company (by market cap) actually created a new trend in manufacuring. What if all Apple products were eventually "Made in USA". Just sayin.... who would not buy into that??
Yeah, think of all those people outside the US that would stop buying Apple products when the price doubles.
First: Apple absolutely does create artificial shortages to increase hype - it is Steve Jobs' first tenet of his remarkable marketing skill.
Second: The real reason Apple execs will not answer the question of when iP4 supply will catch up with demand is because they have shut down the production line while working out the redesign of the antenna.
The question now has become will those of us with the crippled version, as early adopters, get to exchange our problem phone for the redesigned model when it is available. I predict about Oct. 1, as indicated by Steve's announcement of the date when they will quit giving away the rubber bands.
And you know this because someone in the black helicopters that continuously circle your neighborhood transmitted this to you through your tinfoil hat? Something like that?
We wait in baited breath for the additional revelations of your other conspiracy theories.
Yeah, think of all those people outside the US that would stop buying Apple products when the price doubles.
There's a difference between fabrication and assembly. There's no technical reason why apple products couldn't be assembled here. I for one think(don't know) that they could justify the added expense, at a minimum, assemble products USA. Wishful thinking.

But why would I, as a non US based person, care if the items are assembled in China, or the US? Other than price, which would change if they were assembled in the US
Apple can't make the iPhones fast enough.....world wide demand is overwhelming. There is no need to open up the US market to more carriers....it wouldn't increase sales at this point in time.
Apple can make more money from 1 carrier than from multiple carriers as long as demand outstrips supply.
If Apple goes to a multiple carrier model, they will be 'forced' to reduce the required kickback cost for each unit sold. If every carrier offered the iPhone, the iPhone is 'worth less' to each carrier since they would not be able to steal away customers.
It's unclear if they'd be able to gain the same concessions from every new carrier, but you're probably right, since exclusivity would no longer be the draw and carriers would need to undercut each other or offer something to entice customers to their network.
Let's face it with iPhone 4 Apple has screwed up a bit. There really was no excuse. In anyevent production issues must be ironed out or they wouldn't be expanding distribution.
IPhone though isn't where my interest lay. IPad is a big surprise to me, it is far better than any rev one product, in a new category, that I've ever seen. It really is that good and frankly it is all I can do to resist buying one right now.
Why do I resist you might ask. Well simple as good as it is iPad could be a lot better with some simple tweaks. Most of these tweaks could come right out of the iPhone 4 parts bin. They are:
More RAM. While this is probably obvious Norah upgrade to the 512 Meg A4 is needed real soon now.
Likewise the gyro feature in iPhone needs to be ported in.
I'm mixed with respect to a FaceTime Camera but it would seem to fit into Apples rumored plans.
SD port. This should be obvious especially on a portable device with a great screen and useful photography software. The sticky point here is that I would want Apple to give us access to the file system there.
A temperature and pressure sensor for atmospheric conditions. Yeah a bit of a pipe dream but one with numerous potential uses.
What is really notable here is that Apple could implement more memory any time in the iPad. IPhone 4 clearly demonstrates both the hardware and the benefits of more RAM. The gyro is simply needed to keep parity with iPhone for software developers.
The other items are more wishes than anything. Even then I'm mixed on the FaceTime camera.
However the SD slot I see as a big deal. First the camera connection kit is a bit of a joke in the sense that one should not need an attachment for a port standard on other Apple products. Especially with the synergy between iPad and photography. Beyound that one needs to realize that iPad will never have enough Flash storage, so the best place for large files like Movies is on SD cards. Especially if you take off on a trip and give up high speed Internet for a few weeks. Of course a USB port could serve the same purpose but there are additional issues that would likely eliminate that port from the handheld devices. Mainly the USB problem is the expectation that every USB device ever made should work on it. An SD slot allows for additional bulk storage without huge support issues or massive power draw.
Dave
sorry apple has no choice but use USB.

Source? (I guess you saw the activations per day number which in Andy Rubin's blog post didn't mention for how long and doesn't necessarily mean new phones - or only phones).
And you do know that the 3 million iPhone 4s were sold in only five countries compared to the 60 Android devices sold in 49 countries?

Btw. the didn't have a large market share to begin with anyway, and I don't think that anyone will dispute that Android will have a larger market share in the end since they sell so many different devices at different price points.
But is that a problem?

And you base that on three weeks worth of numbers where one part wasn't sales numbers and the other part wasn't even available world wide (and in constrained supply as well)?
Yeah, think of all those people outside the US that would stop buying Apple products when the price doubles.

There's no reason to believe there would be a significant increase in price. The profit margin on their devices is fairly high right now. Would that profit margin go down SOME. Sure, but be made up for the monies they are losing by not meeting demand.
Another thing to consider is that if Apple could reduce it's lead time by increasing the number of suppliers then they would have more time to design and test their products and maybe could have avoided antennagate.
But why would I, as a non US based person, care if the items are assembled in China, or the US? Other than price, which would change if they were assembled in the US
Well you would'nt care and I don't expect you to. However, the US has shipped much of it's manufacturing to China and this country now has high unemployment and lower exports because of it. The Chinese economy has grown at the expense of the US economy. So for us Americans it has caused a bit of a problem including high gas prices and the resulting higher costs of transportation etc etc.
As a leading American company, I feel that Apple would do well to set an example and bring some manufacturing back stateside, maybe try it for one product line? The PR upside would be huge and there is no reason to assume that prices would remotely "double". The rest of the world may not give a crap about the US economy, but who's door do they come knocking on when they need help? lol.
Apple products are designed in CA by some of the brightest minds in the world, including I'm sure more than 1 Brit and many people from around the world. However, a lot of opportunity exists for bringing back some dollars into the flailing US economy, if more US companies started thinking this way then they might have a bigger national market to sell into. Who are they going to rely on to make jobs otherwise - the government? I say build the LTE phone here, make it an american phone "made in USA", sell it to the rest of the world and bring the profits back here.

Apple hasn't dropped their profit margin now, what makes you think they would just to take manufacturing back to the US? You are living in a dream world if you think they will, if they took the manufacturing back, they would increase prices.

Again, as I am a non American, and I don't live in America, I can't see what benefit it would be to increase the costs for all Apple products just to have a few more Americans employeed, I am more concerned about the country I live in, I'm afraid.

Can't wait to see what other 'new products' Jobs keeps referring too!
I'm willing to bet one of the "new products" will be new iPod Touches with a camera. Possibly Facetime compatible...that'd be sweet...
