allowing users to obtain the software at a reduced price, or for free, in exchange for being required to view ads.
In a word, "no". I have absolutely no desire to see ads in the software that is installed locally on my computer. And while I may be worrying too much, I'm afraid that I would find it much harder to trust Apple even if I paid the retail price and used software without the ads.
So I think they're asking for a tremendous customer backlash.
On another subject, I wonder who does those patent drawings? They always seem to show a very interesting interpretation of what things actually look like.
Because if this is true, Apple will soon displace MS as most loathed OS provider. Though as others have noted, it would be a nice idea to fund public computers.
It's exactly the shit like this that prevents me from making further investment into Apple platform and come time for upgrades, I will most likely go with Linux and one Windows machine for gaming and photos/video processing (since Windows took the lead in multimedia production long time ago anyway).
I just can't believe the greed and stupidity of corporations these days.
How did "patenting the heck out of iPhone" work in making Android OS and all the Google phones from HTC, Motorola et al hitting the market any harder? \
Well, many of them, if not all, don't support multitouch functions right out of the box.
Besides, that still makes more sense than "10.7 is going to include mandatory ads!" The idea is absolutely ridiculous.
...since Windows took the lead in multimedia production long time ago anyway).
Uhhh, I've been in media production for web since there was a popular web and if anything I'm seeing Apple grow in market- and mind-share in the media production world.
I can see this patent being used in a niche of some kind. Otherwise, I think most Apple customers would pay more to avoid ads. And yes, I agree with the other posters that ads are a bane if they are "in your face" without the ability to opt out.
Y'all going on like Apple is about to unleash a horror by force.
Perhaps rather it's a handy thing to "invent" and patent to block others from doing it.
Cause you know there are companies who only make bank on ads, said companies might be looking at releasing an OS that would serve as another channel for their spam engines.
Might be difficult to gain traction when Apple, who makes their money by actually making things not just selling ads for Porn and fake drugs puts up a tasty patent block.
I for one think this a great patent, more like it are needed to stop such companies from completely choking the whole global network with legalized spam.
I agree and was thinking the same -- block Google.

Absurd. This patent is meaningless to such decisions.
Apple patents everything they think of—which is smart in case they ever want it. Or in case anyone else wants it! Their patents include all KINDS of crazy things, which never ever happen. They’ve always done that, and always will.
An Apple patent means NOTHING about any intention to actually ship the item shown. It’s just an idea in a massive portfolio of thousands of patents. This idea is fairly crazy, but far from the craziest patent we’ve seen. Fear not: they never happened either. The ones that ever materialize are the rare exception—and often show up in some very different form.
If it’s stuff “like this” that sways you, you’ll be switching to WIndows for reasons that are entirely in your imagination.
A patent like this emerges about once a month, and there are always people who get upset, certain that it points to a big new future. It doesn’t.
Maybe this is for their internet-based apps. Free Mobile Me. That would actually be a way to show everyone what a Mac experience is like, potentially driving Mac sales. It might also be a hedge against Google Apps.
Like Apple needs more money. I'm sure this is all BS. I'm kind of getting sick of a lot of Apple's business practices. The inly thing that keeps me coming back is their OS. So if they fuck that up I don't see much reason to stay a user. Google, step it up.

Could be that Jobs and company are setting up Microsoft. You know how they copy *everything* Apple.

It is quite obvious that the next iteration of AppleTV would be based on iOS. If so, that opens up iAd for Apple TV as well.
In such a scenario, Apple could potentially be looking at offering a deal similar to Hulu - watch iAds every 15 minutes of the show and get the show for free, or watch 2-3 minutes of iAds to begin with and get the show for free, or just pay $1.99 to watch the show without ads.
Most comments in this forum assume that this is targetting MacOS - as customers, we have already paid for MacOS - with what is generally considered as the Apple Tax - so there is no reason for Apple to expect us to watch ads on a Mac.
But for AppleTV, this could be gold - people are used to PAY for cable TV, and still be forced to watch Ads. So any option from Apple, where you get FREE cable TV in exchange for viewing ads would be more than welcome.

Chill dude. This doesn't mean that your home computer will be taken over by ad intervals
As has been posted several times before and which you must have failed to grasp is that in all likely hood this is aimed at public computer terminals.
I imagine that few people would opt for ads to pay for their OS - the OS is just not that expensive.
Having said that - if it is also aimed at forthcoming Apple TV's I can see this as a deal breaker. But if it not only pays for the OS but also subsidizes content subscription deals, it may be a nice option. Most of us live with ads on TV anyway and I imagine Apple would be smarter than pummel the viewer with ads every few minutes the closer you get to the end of a movie.

Creating patents for products one has no intention of making simply to prevent competition sounds rather... underhanded.
