iPod touch with two cameras, Retina Display said to arrive soon
A new rumor claims that Apple plans to release a new iPod touch with a high-resolution Retina Display and two cameras -- much like the iPhone 4 -- in "a few weeks."
The well-sourced John Gruber of Daring Fireball noted Tuesday that the forthcoming Dell Streak would cost $300 with a two-year contract from AT&T, and $550 without a contract. He then said that Apple's anticipated iPod touch refresh will add features that the Streak does not have.
"That's almost twice as much as a good iPod touch, and if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you'll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras," Gruber wrote. "If Dell can't make an iPod touch competitor, who can?"
He declined to elaborate whether the statement about a new iPod touch was a result of inside information, or just reiteration of recent rumors and speculation regarding Apple's anticipated update.
Recently there has been a great deal of evidence to suggest that the new iPod touch will feature a forward facing camera for FaceTime video chat. The latest beta of iOS 4.1 supports Apple's open standard video chat format by inputting a user's e-mail address, a method that would work for a device like the iPod touch that does not have a phone number. And recent purported parts from overseas suppliers showed a space for a forward facing camera.
In addition, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said earlier this summer that his company will ship millions of devices compatible with FaceTime this year alone. Currently, only the iPhone 4 is capable of making FaceTime video chat calls over Wi-Fi.
While Apple is expected to hold an event in September to introduce its new iPod lineup, as it has done for the past few years, one recent rumor suggested that Apple could hold an event in August instead. All I see is maybe a regular camera in the back, more ram and removal of under clocking on the CPU which is around 800 Mhz but under clocked to around 600. With 800mhz and 512 RAM (256 currently) and a back cam it would still be an awesome device and you can have a voice only FaceTime (which would suck but you can just flip the touch over to show yourself and flip it back to see what others are showing you).
Maybe $199 for the old model... sounds a little inexpensive for one with upgraded specs.

Full compatibility with the iPhone which has a 960X640 display and a better resolution than the Streak which costs more than the Touch would.
Realize that The Dell Streak has a 3g radio and can actually make phone class... in other words, it's a cellular phone, not just a media player/consumption device.
With FaceTime on a sub $500 iPod that comes without subscriptions, we'll be witnessing a revolution in communications.

On Nokia N900, sure; I am not aware of another mobile device that does video Skype though. Is there one? Plus, there has to be a way to reach all iPhone 4 owners too, to have more comparable options...
"Apple's claims behind the iPhone 4's Retina Display aren't completely true, display research veteran Raymond Soneira claimed today. While Apple claims that 300 pixels per inch (PPI) is the limit of the human retina and that the iPhone 4's 326PPI easily exceeds it, the DisplayMate president notes that the resolution would need to reach 477PPI for the pixels to truly be 'invisible' to a healthy human eye. Apple's claims don't become completely true until about 1.5 feet from the LCD.
Soneira noted that Apple would likely need to go above the retina's actual resolution to have a visually "perfect" display. Apple's Retina Display claims are thus another example of "spec exaggeration, he said.

If the next iPod Touch is going to have FaceTime, as I believe that it will, video Skype calls won't be far behind.
