While I understand that, the way he presented it was more of an attack on Google. I'm assuming from your response that we're talking about the same Q&A session.

He could have made the response simple and said "No we still won't allow outside apps into the App Store." But instead he said (paraphrasing) "Go to Android. I hear they have porn." Yes, Android can load in third-party apps, but where was the word "porn" in the original question that was asked?

Personally speaking, I believe he could have done without the last part.

This is getting off topic, so this is the last I'm go into this.

And just because it carries no criminal consequence, doesn't imply carte blanche. My car came with a warranty, but if I intentionally crash it, I doubt the manufacturer will replace the drivetrain for free.

When you buy an Apple product, it comes with certain strings. Don't like those strings? Well, you have alternatives.

As your first sentence has an air of, "I am so much smarter than you." Yes, you can alter your car from how it rolls off the show floor. You can change the engine, change the tires, "pimp" it out, add hydraulics, pretty much do anything as long as it's still street legal according to your local laws. There is no warranty on a car saying you can't completely strip it and change everything and the warranty is still valid as long as DMV registers it, now the warranty may change depending on your alterations, but I would GUESS that can be negotiated with your dealer. And even if it does cancel parts of the warranty you can get coverage elsewhere.

Hey guys, I put Blackintosh on my ignore list, but unfortunately by responding to his idiotic comments I get to see them. Over and over again. Heck his name appears nearly 40 times here and one is to many.

And to a more enjoyable opinion may I direct you to a blog posted today titled, "Rock ’Em, Sock ’Em Smartphones – iPhone Versus Android" by Kris Abel of CTV News Canada.

You can still load whatever porn videos you want on the iPad as well. So, no, Apple isn't banning porn from the iPad at all.

In addition the combination of the 5 megapixel camera and iMovie software could be seen as encouragement to make your own.

    Wrong.

Walmart sells TVs and computers. Walmart sells DVDs and computer programs (content). Walmart does not sell porn - and no one's whining about them. Walmart has the right to sell whatever products they choose.

Similarly, Apple sells iPads. Apple sells videos (via iTunes) and apps. Apple does not sell porn. Apple has the right to sell whatever products they choose.

Instead, there are a lot of hacks who sell junk without paying any royalties or license fees. Why in the world should Apple encourage them?

No. It's a simple recognition that different people have different needs. If I need an 8 passenger vehicle, it's not elitist for Ferrari to say "we don't have anything for you". It's a recognition that my needs are not in their target audience. Or, you can turn it around. If I want a really fast, high performance car, it's not elitist for Hyundai to tell me I'm better off looking somewhere else.

I guess the problem is that you don't understand what elitism is. Apparently, anyone who doesn't see the world through AsianBob colored glasses is elitist and not entitled to their opinion.

It's all about a few hackers who like showing the world how cool they are.. The overwhelming majority of iPhone users have no reason to jailbreak.

People especially Jailbreakers should thank Apple for being so restrictive.

Was this sarcasm are you dwelling in a place so far from reality you were serious?

I have a Macbook Pro. I can and do download software and content from the internet and have never had a security problem. Have you ever heard of something called Opensource or know the part it has played in OSX and software that runs on it?

If Apple had been so restrictive with their computers, there wouldn't be an Apple today because no one would have bought any. Wake up.

Those caveats on the use of a car you just quoted are brilliant. Shoot yourself in the foot often? You don't do those things because they are against the general laws dictated by society, not the maker of the car. With a car, you are free to drive it where you choose, carry passengers of your choosing, purchase petrol from the vendor of your choosing, etc. If it had been made by Apple, you would be allowed to take it out of your garage, reverse it to the end of your driveway, drive it back into the garage, reverse it... And that's all. Take it onto an actual road and you would instantly void your warranty. You would only be allowed to carry Apple approved passengers in your exhilarating trips, up and down your driveway, fueled by an Apple branded petrol tanker that had t o come to you. Your car would then be filled up with Apple branded petrol, sold to you at a special Apple price, using a $6000 fuel filler adapter that didn't come with the car and had to be purchased separately.

I love your car analogy. Many thanks, I could have fun with this all day.

Its more like buying a new car then putting after market performance enhancements. It might void your warranty but it is perfectly legal. the car company has no obligation to fix or repair the improvements you made but they will repair anything you have not improved/enhanced......

He has a point in a way that owning something still does not mean there are no rules that apply to how you use what you own.

However, in iOS case rules are a bit ridiculous (from my point of view), so car analogy would be more like buying a car that you cannot drive over 30kph because manufacturer feels it would not be safe if you get involved in an accident at higher speeds.

Apple rules are just too much draconian, imho. I know Apple always have an explanation, but so do most recent dictators for limiting their people freedom. Not my cup of tea, it seems.

You should be able to, as long as you are not endangering lives and property. Using software you want on your iPhone is more like using whatever custom audio in your car, than driving your car at ridiculous speeds.

And the manufacturer is free to make that decision. But, if they told you to only use their brand of gas or if they voided your warranty for using another service centre, you might feel they are being a little heavy handed. You would be free to do so, as long as you understood the consequences.

Or, alternatively, use it how you actually choose to use it. It might void your warranty, but that is the consequence of your choice. This really isn't about the warranty. Fo you honestly think Long was concerned about the warranty when he JB'ed his phone? really?

yes you can????? go on so... update the ECU with something you downloaded from somewhere else.

Install a diff from a mini into a ferrari with ease. reprogram the airbag sensors. go on , please, do it. and tell me how you did it here. i'd love to hear how you cross-graded an ECU Firmware.

and dont compare gas to software, thats dumb. the closest comparison might be that an iphone charges off the same electricity as your nokia/motorola/brand X

    honestly !!!!

    mines bigger anyway !

You should be able to what you want to your iPhone or computer and Apple has the right to deny you warranty. I am willing to live with this. I travel to Europe several times a year and I always bring my iPhone and an unlocked SONY phone so i can use my Orange Sim card to have a local phone number.

Now because of the recent jailbreak decision I have unlocked my iPhone 3GS with no problems and I am a happy camper. I really don't care about all the extra SW but I do want freedom to take the phone I paid for to any carrier if I feel like it. AT&T let me unlock the SONY with no questions asked, but try to that for the iPhone, So F***U Apple and ATT.

Sure they use Cydia to get apps not available through the App Store. But from what I gather, most of those apps do things the iPhone had the capability of doing, but Apple never implemented it.

So I ask: is it stealing if the feature wasn't there to begin with?

Did you read the article this thread is based on? The phone was jailbroken to enable a feature Apple prevent. That is not stealing, neither is doing it to enable a wider choice of txt message tones, to enable tethering, better facilitate the use of the phone when traveling overseas or enabling the use of a volume key as a shutter button for the camera.

As I have said in the post before your reply, I gave it a second thought and I agree with you analogy. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

I have no objections to Apple selling what it wants. I just have a slight issue with Steve Jobs trying to pass off Android allowing a developer to start a porn store as something morally wrong (probably not the best choice of words, but along those lines).

That's all fine. You could also see it as Ferrari being one of the elite of the performance car manufacturers and scoffing at you for even bothering to ask them for the 8 passenger vehicle (what they might consider junk) in the first place. Chances are I just read into what you said wrong. Your choice of using "you don't belong" gives off the feeling of elitism, especially considering the standing Apple products are given.

Since when did I say that no one else is entitled to their own opinion? It's just as equal that I can say that anyone who doesn't see the world through jragosta colored glasses isn't entitled to their opinion. In all my posts here, I have never once stated that my opinion is the only opinion and demanded that everyone see it my way. Your opinion is yours and mine is mine.

Chances are you're going to reply to this post with guns blazing going "wrong wrong wrong". If you do, I urge you to read your last sentence.

I dunno, I could see how people might take those quotes in that light. When you mention you believe you have a moral responsibility to avoid it and then refer to one of your competitors as a source, it could well imply you believe your competitors have no morals, thus making you better than them.

    * Note, I don't really buy the holier than thou bit, but I can see how people would arrive at that opinion form the quotes.
