A watch can tell you the time or enter stopwatch/timer mode far faster than an iPod/iPhone. If you don't need those functions, or if timing is not important to you, you may not need a watch.

I know a lot of adults still wear watches, but they're idiots.

I think if I was the kind of person that was that serious about timing something (like a track coach), that I wouldn't use a watch or even an iPhone app, but rather a specialised device.

My apologies if it was already stated as I didn’t see an image for it while I was perusing, but it’s looking like that 1”x1” LCD is going to appear next week.
I was hoping that was actually a really thin iPod Shuffle with Nike+ built in or a really simple display for the new Apple Home Server (okay, I’m dreaming now). While large for a Shuffle I’m not sure that could be a Nano since the current Nano appears to be competing with non-HD Flip cameras. At that size and form factor it can’t feasibly play videos or be used as a camera even if you could get all the HW inside. I can see a smaller Nano, just not one that small, at least not without also continuing the current basic form factor and size. I’m weighing in that this is a new and improved Shuffle, their clip on iPod. A Super Shuffle, if you will.

apple knows how to put a great interface on just about anything.

think about it, all they would really have to do is remove a row/column of icons to fit the iphone interface on a 2" screen.

Kempler & Strauss makes the W PhoneWatch shoots video, makes phone calls, plays Bluetooth stereo music & videos, gets and sends email, among other things $200. I'm hoping Apple Makes one of these some day.

I hope they don't get rid of the click wheel. I HATE the iPod interface on the Touch and iPhone. If you are at the gym, mowing the lawn or driving the car, etc. It is infinitely easier to make adjustments by feel with the click wheel than having to use a touch screen which requires you to be looking at the screen.

It's not just a watch. It's the internet. On your wrist.

Pilots and divers wear watches. Down at 150' below sea level---Oh let me see how long I've been 150" have to time my ascent?let me check my iPod Touch?naw, ain't going to happen.

Personally, I and some of my friends still like RR pocket watches, mine are a Ball 999B and Hamilton 992B?both keep excellent time and I still use the Hamilton. Like to look at analog time rather than digital readout.

I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 5th gen Nano if this turns out to be true. Maybe two. The clickwheel rocks when you can't look at a display.

Hopefully Apple will discount those on Sept. 1st...

I received a fifth generation Nano for Christmas last year. I absolutely love it. The FM radio has excellent reception, I love the click wheel, etc. However, I have nearly filled my 16GB model. I was hoping the 6th generation Nano would have a 32GB model available and just improve on the last two years models. Based on what I am reading here and at other sites, NO THANKS.

The thought of making the Nano even smaller, using a touch screen on such a tiny unit and making it more like a Shuffle leaves me cold. I think I will stick with the Nano I have, and buy an iPod Touch if I decide I really need the extra memory capacity. All I can say is that I am glad I didn't wait till the 6th generation Nano to get an iPod.

And this is precisely what Apple wants you to do: move up to an iPod touch. By merging the shuffle and nano lines while simultaneously eliminating the iPod Classic, anyone with large storage needs will move to the Touch and the iOS ecosystem.

What are you gonna do instead, buy a Zune?

I almost did buy a Zune HD before I asked for the Nano. I almost bought one. It was not wanting to use a touch screen while carrying the unit in my pocket the relatively low audio volume and not wanting to use the Zune Marketplace that made my mind for me. Apple may want me to buy a Touch, and I may do that in the end. I was considering it anyway.

But the question is, how successful will the new Nano be, assuming it ends up being the product that is being reported? And will they be better off with this product line than they would had been otherwise. That is an open question. Before my iPod, I had a Sandisk Sansa, so I am not afraid of non-Apple products. Some people may go with a Sandisk Clip+ instead of the Nano.

Maybe instead of having controls on the touchscreen nano, it will just be gesture based.

    Tap Screen=Play/Pause

    Swipe Left=Previous Track

    Swipe Right=Next Track

    Slowly Swipe Left=Rewind

    Slowly Swipe Right=Fast Forward

    Swipe Up/Down=Volume

These gestures are easy and intuitive enough to be performed while in the pocket.

I just saw the picture of what is believed to be the new Nano on this website. I do await to see the unveiling, if for no other reason because I am always curious about new gadgets. So in that respect, I do have an open mind.

However, I am a tall person and have large hands. Tiny electronic devices often give me problems being that they do not work easily with my larger fingers. When I looked at that picture, I thought of that as a possible issue.

I guess I think that the 5th generation case is a sweet spot for me. It works well for me. I love the click wheel and the feature set. One of the reasons I held off from an iPod in the first place was to get a radio. I had filled up my 8GB Sandisk E200 after 3 years and it had a radio. The FM radio in my Nano has amazing reception, better virtually ever other FM radio in my house. I almost bought the Zune HD just to get at its HD radio.

I probably will buy a Touch in time, for the extra capacity, the wireless, and the ability to run apps. But keep my 16GB Nano for the excellent radio, working out, yard work, etc. I wish Apple well with their 6th Generation Nano, but the 5th Generation Nano already comes close in my mind to being as close to the perfect small MP3 player.

Interestingly it was the railroads that brought structure to time in this country. The conductor and his pocket watch are almost iconic. Could you imagine traveling back in time two centuries with iPod Touches, the railroads would have gone nuts over such a device. Even without the Internet and other communication features something like the Touch would have been very useful back then.

This just sounds silly to me. You're basically saying that you can't be bothered to pull your phone out of your pocket, so you want a thingie on your wrist to control the phone in your pocket?? WTF?

This does sound silly but a little perspective might help. I've actually have missed appointments because I never felt nor heard the alarm. A watch could solve that problem for some people. Not me as I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a watch, I'm not that vane.

Actually this issue is why I wish there was a Alarm that we could set that is continous. That it alarms forever till acknowledged or the battery dies.

Or in this case dismiss a gadget before it is delivered.

Don't buy into the garbage here on the net. Apple will be pleased no matter what you buy, especially if it leads to more music sales.

As to that issue with volume, remember you can't get back hearing lost.

It could be extremely successful, we won't know of course until it is released. The thing that you need to realize is that the rumors are just that and are likely missing a lot of details. Apple has a lot of patents they could draw on to make that screen as useful as the current Nano.

This is a risk every single manufacture takes with a new product or revision to an old one. Some flop like New Coke and others end up a run away success like iPad.

Apple like all companies wants success stories. If Nano is being refactored to the extent implied they will have worked hard to make it attractive to a large number of buyers. However their risk here isn't as bad as might be implied as current Nano and Shuffle sales have tanked. That is a good portion of iPod sales are now Touches. Further a Touch screen does not imply the same iOS as the Touch iPod, the interface could very well be an adaptation of the Nanos interface.

I don't think there are many that are affraid of non Apple products. What they don't want to give up is iTunes. Or more exactly the infrastructure built up around the iPods.

Once you move to Touch and its computer capabilities that infrastructure becomes even more important. Back to this rumored device, it could be built to take advantage of that infrastructure and still suppott a tactile interface for traditional iPod usage. For example a surface like a track wheel could be molded into the screen or the functionality could be on the back of the device. On top of all of this the electronics for these devices is getting incredibly small so physical size dose not dictate performance. Apple could have a tailored made SoC for this device delivering the same performance as the first Touch in a fraction of the space. 3D chip technologies are coming on strong right now, it isn't easy to predict how far Apple will go here. I'm confident that potetial to impress is there.

In any event the debut is days away. Then we cannmake informed decisions. Maybe it won't be everybodies cup of tea but I suspect it will be desirable. I'd be really impressed if it had WiFi and FaceTime.

In the high end market I'm beting on the 120 Gb iPod (named only iPod, because they want people to understand that their flagship mp3 player doesn't need wheel cilck anymore...) with the touch fullscreen without the wheelclick

When you say iPod Video do you mean iPod Touch?

In my humble opinion, this is a TERRIBLE idea.

The problem with the touchscreen this small as rumored on the new nano is that given the different finger sizes, it could end up being more difficult to navigate around the player controls than necessary. And given the really small size of the player, my guess is that they'll limit the storage capacity to 4 and 8 GB--also not a good idea!

I still wished Apple rolled out a new nano based on the 5G model but with a slightly thicker case to accommodate a larger battery and more storage capacity so the battery life per charge is 35 hours max for audio and accommodates 16 or 32 GB of flash memory. And the new nano will now add the ability to take still pictures in addition to video.
