what would cause it to freeze while watching streaming video?

    Does the video freeze or the whole interface? What version of Flash do you have installed - you can check using Safari > Help > installed plugins?

    I press and hold the off button till it goes off.

    do I need to do some kind of monthly maintenance to keep it running fast?

    No, you need to read the thread and do what they've said to do about Flash. This has NOTHING to do with your computer's capability to play the video in its own right. Your computer does not "slow down" month to month. This is Flash. There are NO definites with Flash.

    And I answered it. This isn't a Windows machine where every application has access to a universal Registry. Your computer will NOT slow down unless you do crap to it, namely Flash in this case.

    Are you still experiencing the lock-ups with the updated Flash version? If so, there could be a problem with your hard drive as Flash has to cache movie data to it and if it has trouble writing, it will lock up the system. If it only happens with Flash and no other program, it's less likely to be that.
