The Obvious...

Apple MUST update the PowerMacs tomorrow due to the fact that the new iMac has a G4 processor and a SuperDrive with an LCD for under $1800! If Apple does not, it risks destroying sales of the higher-margin PowerMacs.

I guess this "confirms" new PowerMacs..

i hope they upgrade the PM line....but still don't buy the arguement of iMacs stealing from the PM line....i don't want a PM, but i do want a iMac with a fast chip and superdrive....if the latest iMac didn't (or doesn't, if Time is a hoax) have this i would continue to use my current iMac and just wait to up-date (or horrors, buy a pc)....apple offering great iMacs and great PMs is good for apple and all of us...selling a so-so iMac just to protect PM sells will only insure that neither sell well...g

If iMac is G4 PowerMac will be G5 for sure

So if no G5's, how will Apple differentiate between the lines?

    Expandability?

    Faster /better motherbard (DDR)?

    Dual processors w/moderately faster MHz?

    Significantly higher MHz w/single processors?

    Quad processors?

Just because the iMac has a G4 doesn't mean the towers can't. When Steve introduced the original iMac, he especially touted the fact that it featured the same chip as the pro towers, which it did until August of 99.

Remember that Powermacs and iMacs have had the same processor before, just with different speeds (and not by much). PowerMacs have more options/configs and expansion.

Do those new iMacs have DDR???

It really ought to be the minimum, even for consumer desktops.

    And what's the graphic system?

Anyone heard anything about the actual MHz of this G4 in the iMac?

Do all models have a G4, or just the top end?

Any further info? I read the timecanada.com article, but it didn't seem to get into hardcore specs.

Damn, I LOVE that new iMac. I'll be getting one VERY soon!

Would like it if they took a page from the iBook (heehee...) and simply had the entire iMac line at the same processor/clock speed and just differentiated the line via optical drive, hard drive capacity, etc.

    SO much easier and appealing.

ALSO: is this $1800 Canadian or American? It's a Canadian magazine, so...

Do we know the clock speeds of the new iMac? I'm currently thinking the new Power Macs will be G4, topping out at 1.2 or 1.4 GHz. But, if the new iMacs reach 1 GHz, I guess the Power Macs could be pushed faster...

Woah, easy there fella. I'd say more like 867 and even that is pushing it...

This little bugger will get expensive...

I can't see it being in CDN funds, as right now the "old" CRT iMac with the 700 MHz G3 processor sells for $2299 CDN...

A little pricey for the top of the line model... $1800 US is about $2825 CDN. Quite a price hike.

Worth it mind you, but still a big jump.

(come on Apple, make a liar out of me - make that $1800 CDN!!)

Whatever the hell it is, I want one.

    OMG!!!

The obvious match to the new iMac is the <a href="http://www.imotep.be/home.html"; target="_blank">G5 sphere</a>

    hemisphere iMac

    sphere PowerMac

but will the iMac user feel half as powerful?

I guess it wasn't that obvious...

I say Power macs will go G5.

The Apollos will initially go into new Ti's.

Then the apollos will eventually spread into the iMac line while the Powerbooks go to G5's.

Of course, iBooks will go G4 also. Maybe as early as MWNY.
