I don't understand the abysmal battery life. ISTM that this device is part of a regular cellphone, with chunks left out. Why doesn't the battery last at least as long as a typical cellphone?

Because it's not only connecting via 3G, it's also transmitting via wi-fi. So you essentially have two radios running continuously vs. your cell phone which only has one.

But I agree the battery life is a shortfall. I think it was designed with the thought that you could always plug it into the USB on your laptop for extra power. I wonder how much extra time some of the available supplemental battery packs will get you?

At the point where you have to charge and carry THREE devices with you, I think the case for the MiFi just gets blown out of the water.

I love my iPad but this reason alone is why I will probably not buy another iPad in the future.

I have wireless at home and no-wireless at work so I use 3G while traveling and/or at work. I have a decent amount of news apps, stream a little but not much music off Pandora, do a lot of email, do other personal things.....and just about every month I get the 2gb notice text message telling me I am creeping up on the limit.

I find it absolutely disgusting that I force myself to not use it the last few days every month. Also, no...I don't watch netflix movies on it....don't watch HD YouTube clips....and don't download large files....

I am hoping they either raise the limit or another company offers a much higher bar or unlimited. I am on the look out for other tablet models to see if other ones offer any better deals with data. I admit none look even half as good as the iPad at the moment but I really won't have much choice than to switch if I cant get some breathing room with the data.

I am always stunned to see the prices for the American data plans!

To give you an idea: Here in OLD, OLD Austria in OLD, declining, 'socialist' Europe I can get 2GB for 6?, 15GB for 15?. (including a free MicroSimm for the iPad)

You must absolutely love your providers.
