That's odd, my iPad still gets email and other network related alerts/data while it is locked and sleeping, so I'm not sure you know what you're talking about.
Same here. I take my iPad to the gym to watch movies while I work out. As soon as I walk back into my house I can hear the emails coming in. All while it is asleep.
Nope. that would be the day that Apple steps up with a CDMA ipad.
Which would also be real fuel to this whole Verizon iphone rumor. Because even with LTE, it would need CDMA to fall back on until Verizon's network is up in full.
Otherwise, we need someone releasing a triSim that can handle all 3 with zero to minimal negative impart on the battery life etc
I use my wifi only 16gb all the time. It works perfectly and no issues. Dont know what the guy is talking about complaining it doesnt have 3g. My son uses it in the back seat with our mywi to stream netflix. Works like a charm. To each their own. By the way, as someone who has coverage with both verizon and att, I can say(for me in seattle) Verizon is waaay better than att. Way better, and the iphone if it ever hits big red will kick att's arse. Att sucks, the iphone rules.
Anyway, get a MacBook Air and a Virgin Wireless (Sprint network) 3G USB dongle (~$75US) for $40/month UNLIMITED with no contract. You can use network sharing if you want to share your connection with another device. You can also buy 100MB for 10 days for $10 if you only need 3G temporarily.
Yeah the Verizon situation doesn't make any real sense for many users unless you happen to live say in an area in the midwest where ATT could have poor 3G coverage.
It also os a convenient way for Apple and Verizon to get familiar with each other. measure demand, get support structure in place, etc. -- before Verizon iPhone rollout!
Smartest thing in the world for Verizon to work with Apple. If they let Apple have their way they will bring in huge revenue to Verizon. Look at what Apple has done for a crappy carrier. Just think, the best spamrtphone on the best network...excellent match. Once the carriers let Apple do its thing on their networks their companies' revenue will explode and the android market will slow down considerably.
I expect that the next release of the iPad will have the ability to do either CDMA or GMS. We use a tablet at work that already has the ability. We normally use CDMA but all I need to do to use AT&T is plug in a SIM card. The same will happen to the iPad.
I think that Verizon has the better plan. I don't care what the carriers say a 250MB plan is just dumb. It does not take much to go over it. Verizon 1GB plan is a really good starting point that most people will not go over.
Personally I'd rather see the carriers to go a simple plan like $10 to $15 for the first 1GB then $10 for each 1GB after that with no limit on how much you can eat.
For everyone who has doubts or concerns if there is GPS on the Verizon iPads, here's a good link to follow: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/appl...s-and-no/5898; you'll need to read "adambanksdotcom" comment to possibly confirm this. He says that he has a wifi only iPad that probably does have GPS; and he also gives a brief review about using the wifi only iPad with Navigon. I'll be sure to call Apple to confirm this and update my reply.

No. It doesn't. We've torn them apart. There is NO GPS in the Wi-Fi iPad. Verizon did not get special iPads. Some guy did not get a special iPad. You can use Wi-Fi triangulation to find yourself with a Wi-Fi iPad.
After just speaking with an AppleCare Rep. for the iPad within less than a minute ago, it has now been confirmed that any user of a "WiFi Only" ipad can use GPS just so long as they have an internet connection. When the user is not near a hotspot, this is where the Verizon MiFi comes in to help ensure GPS navigation. If the user needs more than what the "Maps Application" offers, the WiFi only iPad will work with a 3rd party GPS app. made for the iPad; GPS apps which are currently on the iPhone that do not have an iPad version may have trouble with resolution. With any 3rd party application, check with them for how to configure it.

SO IT'S NOT ACTUALLY GPS. It's identifying location based on the location of the currently connected wireless network.

If you don't have line of sight to the satellites (be it highrise buildings blocking you or you are driving in a tunnel), you are getting your location data from other sources as well --- even if you have a iphone with GPS.
If you have a Verizon ev-do router which can get location data from aGPS and from the cell phone towers and it passes that information to you wifi ipad ---- then your wifi ipad will know where you are.

Is there a GPS chip in the MiFi? Because if there is no dedicated GPS chip, you're STILL wrong. It's not aGPS unless it has a real GPS chip in addition to cell triangulation.
And that still has nothing to do with the Wi-Fi iPad not having GPS.

Yes, it does.

That's neat. So the MiFi will shoot the iPad its location data based on GPS and cell.
But the Wi-Fi iPad does NOT have GPS on its own.
