You put this with the book that quoted Prez. Dubya as saying some outrageously cartoonish warlord things ("Give us the carpet of gold or we give you the carpet of bombs"), it seems as if the French have a little 9/11-conspiracy related sub-economy.

Actually, books like these (and I think these in particular) have been endorsed by Le Monde and other "respected" French papers.
I believe an adminstration as evil and corrupt as the current is capable of almost anything.

Alright, mr. holier than thou. I agree that this administration isn't exactly perfect, but it's no worse, when speaking of morality, than the former.
On the topic at hand:
I'd argue that the EU loves to hate America, but it's sort of a closet-hate. If you ask me it's all because of jealousy: we do everything they don't, we do everything opposite to the way they are taught by the socialists in charge, yet the Euro isn't increasing against the dollar, and Europe's worth isn't increasing in any measurable sense. France may well dislike us the most, because at this point the only economic area they excel in involves culture & tourism.

Calm down ! i do not buy this crap, i have a quick look of the site : there was also an article about the help of France to commit genocide in Rwanda. This is not representative of the average French media opinion, it's the first time i hear about this conspiracy theory. The principle media in france is TV : there was no word upon this. Concerning Le Monde, sometimes they make mistakes, they are not as serious as they where in the past. Some french media love theory of conspiration lead by governements , French or US.
I recently see an article saying that the explosion of Toulouse was not the fault of Total but the fault of the chemistry company who made the fuel for Ariane. The french governement is supposed to hide the truth in order to do not pay for the wounded and for the repairs. This was in a serious right (but not winged ) french media Valeurs Actuelles. Personaly i did not buy this either.
Personaly i am not a fan of Xfiles where there is governement conspiracy at every corners of the series. I do not want to enter in paranoia.
So be quiet, this only an opinion of a website, belonging to the author of the book to promote his own idears and to sell his book ...This is a side effect of the liberty of expression, how do you call this first amendement ? Actually the Mc Donald's Bomber was fired from Israel, this guy has founding no more thant interesting to encounter Arafat when he was surrender by the israelians : i do not see what Arafat have to do with mondialisation. The funny thing with this man (Jose Bove) that he receive an american education , knows all the tricks to be mediatic, and try to turn himself in a martyr.
This guy is a heroe for certain French people, but not for me, demount a Macdo, or destroy transgenic plantation is not my cup of tea, however acting against mondialisation is a lame as trying to stop the evolution.

This book is just par for the course. People love to hate us. They like to blame someone I guess for their problems.
[added] People are inherently hateful and spiteful. They need an object for their desire to hate, be it Americans, government, religions, etc. These books are an outlet, providing a sense of legitimacy to their otherwise irrational thoughts. Yes, we have our bad spots in America and we're not always right (who is these days?). We are, after all, just more people.

true many people love to hate the others for their own problems. When you are the leader in something or importants figures, you are a potential target for this. USA is a leader in many things, army economy culture, so it is one of the favorite target for hate.
In France, a crazy guy kill 8 people in the mayor assembly in the town call Nanterre, sometimes after he commited suicide : but he write a letter. The only reason for this murder, was that this man was lame at everything, he did not suceed in politic either so he just decide to kill himself but to kill before as many elected representant as possible just by jalousy, because at his eyes this people have succeed but not him. This is a very sad story : you can be killed just because a dumb personn is jealous of your (little) sucess. Crazy but unfortunately true.
PS : even on this tragedy i am sure that a journalist will write a book discribing a secret conspiracy ...

The reason I decided to look this up is that one of my classmates was talking to the class about how this book wasn't "available on U.S. soil" and she was very indignant about it, so obviously there are interested parties everywhere, but I'm just curious as to why all this tripe is coming out of France. Maybe there are no libel laws in France or something I don't know, I'm just curious.

I am not a lawyer so i will have problems to said if the law permit or not to make false statement, i think the limit deals with diffamation rather than insane theory.
