Apple seeds first Mac OS X 10.6.6 beta in advance of 10.6.5 release

Apple has issued the first build of Mac OS X 10.6.6 to developers ahead of the public release of Mac OS X 10.6.5.

Mac OS X 10.6.6 build 10J521 was released to developers Thursday, suggesting that the 10.6.5 update could arrive any day now.

The changelog for Mac OS X 10.6.6 notes that the beta "contains developer support for fetching and renewing App Store receipts." App Store receipts could be a reference to the recently announced Mac App Store that is coming to Snow Leopard in the next three months.

Taking a cue from the success of the iOS App Store, Apple will begin offering Mac applications through a digital storefront, keeping a 30 percent cut of sales. Developers began submitting the first Mac App Store apps to Apple on Wednesday.

The trio of iOS 4.2, Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 are expected to be released shortly, as the new AirPrint feature on iOS 4.2 requires iTunes 10.1 or Mac OS X 10.6.5. The golden master for iOS 4.2 was released to developers earlier this week. Apple has promised that iOS 4.2 will come sometime in November.

The last update to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard came in the form of 10.6.4 in June. Mac OS X 10.6.4 resolved issues with the trackpad and Adobe's Creative Suite 3.

On Oct. 20, Apple revealed Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which will bring a number of iOS features back to the Mac. Drawing inspiration from the iPad, Mac OS X 10.7 will feature a LaunchPad for finding and launching apps and full screen applications.

Does this mean that 10.6.6 will be required for the Mac App Store, which means it’ll be released within the next 3 months? That’s pretty fast considering we’ve had 10.6.4 for nearly 4 months now.

Well if this is the only thing it updates then it should be a fairly quick thing to ad (spelling error for pun).

I'm betting on Friday night. I'm not an expert however, just following the news and throwing in logic.

I think this is a first! A beta of an update beyond the next one! I've been following for a long time and I don't ever remember this happening before.

Someone posted a 'release' matrix of previous releases; for some reason Apple tends to prefer release dates around Tuesday/Wednesday - the closer to the beginning and end of the week the release is less likely. With that being said, I could be proven wrong

Its 7:10pm here in New Zealand so it could be possible that it'll make it Friday - maybe get iTunes 10.1 and 10.6.5 out there before the iOS 4.2 is released. I'm guessing that maybe iOS 4.2 will be released mid November which will give time for developers to test their software against the new release and fix any incompatibility bugs.

One can only assume that internally 10.6.5 has gone 'gold', and the next logical step is to start on the next update...
  • Reply 13 of 25
Maybe Apple should drop the term 'going gold', as it refers to an outdated and soon to be obsolete medium.

All kidding aside, anyone know if Apple is ever going to give us openGL 3.x, as 4.0 is already out there???

'Sic' means 'this' in Latin. It originally was a message to the typesetters to not correct a misspelt word but to print as shown. I think.

"sic" has also been expanded to let the reader know that the conveyor of the information did not make the mistake, and that it was quoted verbatim, but that the conveyor of the information knows or believes it to be a mistake.

You'll see it in many print articles, and far more regularly, although not as regularly as I'd like, in articles on the web.

    Mac Dictionary

    sic 1 |sik|

    adverb

used in brackets after a copied or quoted word that appears odd or erroneous to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the original, as in a story must hold a child's interest and ?enrich his [ sic ] life.?

Now, we all have to get together and figure out what is wrong with the usage of the word "his" in that sentence.

    Grammarians! Go at it!

I have never known that to happen before, the next release and next-next release being seeded at once. I guess it is easier to write "Requires Mac OS X 10.6.6" on software than to write "Requires the App Store Update. This can be installed through Software Update."

The seed is only 3.7MB in size.

I play World of Warcraft, and I notice that several graphical features, such as realtime reflections in the water and improved shadows based on dynamic lighting are disabled with a note beside them saying that they require 10.6.5, so I think we can assume that there is a significant update to the OpenGL that comes with OS X.

Thanks soli for the release date info. Regarding that, if I were a professional developer, I would release it at the beginning of the week so as to not get calls on the weekend when problems develop. Management has their own ideas and would be the ones to change that.

From the matrix, it looks like most of the dot releases are on Monday or Tuesday. I suspect that they go for Monday and it slips to later in the week if problems are found as they prepare it for release.
