Foxconn adds new production plants to meet demand for Apple's iPad

Foxconn, Apple's overseas manufacturing partner, has added new production plants in Chengdu, China, to produce an extra 10,000 iPads per day and help to meet demand for the touchscreen tablet during the holiday season.

Taiwanese industry publication Digitimes reported Tuesday that Foxconn Electronics, the trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry, has started "mass production" of the iPad at its new plants in Chengdu. The production lines can only build about 10,000 units each day, or about 300,000 iPads per month.

Foxconn began shipping iPads from the site this month, and production capacity is only expected to grow over time. The report said that the new Chengdu plants are expected to become "a major supply base" in the first quarter of 2011.

Apple's manufacturing partner has been looking to move its production plans to inland China to reduce costs. Labor is cheaper and land costs are reduced further inland, and just last week some workers in Foshan, China, were protesting Foxconn's plans to move factories inland.

Foxconn reportedly has big plans for its Chengdu factories, with about 50 iPad production lines to be set up there. When the maximum capacity at the plants comes online, it will be able to produce about 40 million iPads per year.

Currently, most iPads are produced in Shenzhen, where about 2.5 million units maximum can be built each month. iPad shipments in the fourth quarter could top 7 million, bringing total 2010 sales to 15 million, sources indicated.

The report also reiterated that Apple's second-generation iPad is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2011. Digitimes said that Foxconn Precision Component and Foxlink will be component suppliers, while Chimei Innolux is expected to supply panels for the device.

What this is REALLY telling us is: The only reason Samsung will sell a million Galaxy Tabs this year is because Apple simply can't produce iPads fast enough to meet demand. Apple could actually sell about as many of these things as could physically be made. And Apple is only about to begin sales in Korea, where it's no coincidence that the majority of Galaxy Tabs (around 600,000 all told!) have already been sold.

my guess for iPad shipments this Q. is 8 million spurred on by holiday sales and the subsidised network malarky which is going on in the UK and others. With a sticker price of £200 for a computer ( effectively) netbooks are damned.

Could you imagine back in 1990, just 20 years ago, that one day, factories in China will be added in large part for Apple product lines...? And that Apple simply cannot make enough products despite tapping the cheapest and most prolific manufacturers? And that to compete others have to use FREE operating systems (ie. Android)...?

    It's all gone crazy!

So I assume you buy no consumer products at all, right? Because you realize that thanks to 30+ years of corporate ownership of our government, NOTHING is manufactured here.

So get off your high horse about Apple.

Thats exactly the point I was trying to make, the stinking republicans and their crappy policy/laws has created this perverse outsourced economics thats destroying our middle class and putting foreign workers at harm. All tech companies in the United States use this new business model in their product construction/development.

Thats funny. All my friends that work in manufacturing must be lying about what they do.

This is a freaking global economy. I'm sick of hearing this anti-big business crap and broad generalizations. If you know a specific instance where something is not being done right or ethically then complain. You guys seem to think that there is some fixed number of jobs in the world. The only thing we are lacking is enough ambitious people to create jobs here. Maybe we should fault ourselves for having one of the worst education systems among industrialized nations.

Uh.....you think this is limited to the United States? Stuff is made in China because the labor is dirt cheap. Tech companies from all over the world have their stuff made in China. Not sure how the republicans managed that!

Apple has a wonderful partner in Foxcom. They can produce the iPad so cheaply it is amazing, and a real benefit for all of us who can buy them for less than $500!

We all benefit from the way Foxcom efficiently produces iPads.

None of them can get that stuff cheaper than Apple. That is why Apple's margins are so high. That, in turn, allows Apple to do such great work and make all of our lives better.

Just utter nonsense. Lets see, who ran the show during the 90's when a lot of tech manufacturing started and/or moved overseas? Oh that's right, a guy named Clinton ... what party was he affiliated with? Trying to pin manufacturing jobs moving overseas on the Republicans is downright ignoramus. Please stop spewing your lies and political bullshit on a tech thread and go slobber all over MSNBC's love fest blogs.

Clinton trade policies were indeed reprehensible. Keep in mind it happened after he lost the congress and swung to the right. In conjunction with the republican congress he not only gutted our manufacturing jobs, but killed financial regulation. Sad legacy.

    Lesson to be learned today.

Seems like a terrible expense to bring this production capacity on line now, and have to retool for the iPad2 in just a few months.

FYI: The Republican Congress wrote the legislation while Clinton was being endlessly harassed by Ken Starr at the behest of said Congress.

The US workers would like to apologize for requesting adequate healthcare and pension plans. The US citizenry would like to apologize for requesting an unpolluted environment and checks and balances in corporate power, price fixing, etc.

Unregulated business leads to greedy corruption. Regulation is important. The linked article is very biased.
