Canadians Boo US National Anthem

Last night, at the Bruins- Canadiens game in Montreal, Canadian fans booed the US national anthem both during its singing, and at its completion. The Canadian national anthem, of course, got a standing ovation.

While people here are not totally sure, the only explanation that people can come up with is that the Canadians booing of the national anthem was the 'retaliation' for the accidental death of 8 Canadian soldiers overseas.

Either way, it was an unfortuante situation, and I hope that Bruins fans will show some restraint and not boo the Canadian nation anthem when the series comes back to Boston.

Well they're not real canadians. They's from Quebec or little France as I like to call it. Is this really surprising? I think not.

Although I'd love to just blame the fans in Montreal, I thought I heard Don Cherry talking about the fans in Vancouver doing the same thing at their last game with Detroit. (was busy doing other things at the time, didn't really hear it all that clearly)

It's disgraceful really. How did Don put it... "those people are the scum of the earth".

    That about sums it up.

In an update, a member of the Senate of Canada has officially apologized for the poor response on behalf of the Canadian government and people.

This has been going back and forth in American and Canadian cities (in both basketball and hockey) since last year's playoffs. Has nothing to do with the war, and everything to do with the typically retarded sports fan. Isn't it cute in the US the first examples you've likely heard of were of Canadian cities boo-ing "The Star Spangled Banner" and in Canada the first stories the sports press picked-up were of American cities boo-ing "Oh' Canada"

So today, people are doing it as a way to disparage the other team (when it's from the other side of the border). Anyone else remember the tizzy created by a certain basketball player acouple of years back when he refused to stand for the playing of national anthems? (Was it Abdur Rahim?) Sports writers all over NA were giving him a hard time, fans booed him. Why? It isn't an international event; he plays for an owner, not a national team. He is effectively an employee who should not be required to make any sort of national or patriotic gesture. All the guy wanted to do was sit on the bench during anthems, people got pissed about it. Now a good many of those people are acting like complete ash-holes before during and after the playing of national anthems.

I've never really thought that a domestic contest is really the place for the playing of national anthems anyway. So, some overpaid athletes who jump from city to city are going to hit a ball, or each other, around for a couple of hours while people drink beer and shout obscenities. What a time to get patriotic! Get rid of the anthems altogether -- as far as sports go, they should be for international contests only.

Amen. Like how fans cheer when a player is seriously injured. Sportsmanship is dead.

When was it alive? Back when spectator sports involved actual death?

Sports hooligans need to be shot, it's possible for people to love their sports teams without acting like jack-asses.

This started in Detroit when fans there booed during the Canadian anthem played for Toronto. Thats what started it. Pretty pathetic although i think they were directing those boos at the team, not Canada. Still, its pretty damn rude...................

Oh damn, my cynicism has been bested.

Well, there are occasional real sportsmen, but sportsmanship I guess has never really been a widespread affliction.

Yeah, I was watching the Vancouver-Detroit Game (Game III) and noticed the booing. My heart sank. There aren't too many things that get in the way of my tiny little Canadian national pride, but hearing that was horrible.

I didn't hear it in Game IV. It was uncalled for. The one thing I do like is that the Canucks have been very disciplined in not hammering Yzerman with his bad knee.

Just before the American national anthem was sung, the announcer mentioned the game being dedicated to the bombing victims. That might have done it.

It doesn't make any sense to me, however. Most of the NHL (etc) teams are made up of both American and Canadian players, and booing one anthem or the other will upset both teams.

    It's a true embarrassment. <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />

_Canadians_ are idiots? It was an American pilot who killed 4 Canadian soldiers during a "friendly fire" incident last week.

I say, we take our lumber, our oil, our water, _and_ our Stanley Cup, and go home.

First of all, Canada really doesn't need to be in Afghanistan but whatever. The guy that didn't stand up for the national anthem was Shareef Abdur-Rahim, no? I remember this well. Hmmm, a muslim that doesn't like America. SOUNDS LIKE A TERRORIST TO ME!!!!!! Jail the bastard for months!!!!

On a side note: why is it that all the canadian girls I know that live in America are really hot?

Whoah man its hokey, it happens. Your acting like that lunatic that ran onto the ice after Zednik was taken off in the stretcher. It didnt look intentional at all, even the Canadian announcer said he was more dissapointed with the Canadian response than the actual incident (all the fist fights, lunatics, yelling from the coach, and intentionaly taking the legs out from the Boston goley.)
