I've reinstalled from the apple latest release, and iTunes hangs shortly after starting - ten seconds, perhaps. I get no error message, just the lovely spinning wheel... This started after the update to 10.1.1, and continues even after two downloads of the full version.
This may be all to obvious but have you tried trashing the prefs file and then restarting? Your issue sounds a bit different from what most are posting.
Best of luck - I know how annoying it can be chasing something like this.
BTW - I used Software Update on my 2007 iMac and had no problems at all. Sorry some are having problems.

This whole thing seems overblown to me. A very few people are having problems, and the symptoms are inconsistent. I say user error.

Very good advice, imo.
My guess is that some people are having problems with the download process, which is why an install directly from the Apple site usually works. But if the problem is the prefs file then that would need to be trashed to solve things.
I think we need to know what kind of Mac these crashes were happening on... need more detail about the specifics surrounding their update problems.
Actually, its not the specifics of the problem, its the fact that whenever Apple can be noted to have a PROBLEM with ANYTHING... blogs like this live to rant and rave.
Ever notice you do not see...... "4 users noted some problem with an Apple update on the ... blog"? Instead you get..... "APPLE DOOMED...... NEW UPDATE...XXXXX CRASHES USERS COMPUTERS..... HELL FREEZES OVER.... " type wording.... at least in the title.
Just a thought,

Plus its 26 degrees here in florida.... maybe Hell is freezing over.... LOL
MacBook Pro 10.6.5 - loaded via Software Update - repeated crashes - download from Apple.com got it going again
But... this is neither magical and wonderful or revolutionary! I thought everything that Apple did was all that, and more. Could it be that applications written for an environment make a difference?
It crashed on my late 2009 MBP. I just trashed iTunes and then reinstalled a fresh copy and it works fine. It even fixed that annoying message of allowing incoming connection that popped up ever since version 10 came out. Reinstalling took all of two minutes. Minor annoyance at best.
Apple's official procedure for removing iTunes from a Mac:
So much for "just drag it to the trash". Apple should seriously start working on implementing uninstallation and dependency checking features in their package installer. Rather than telling people "just drag it to the trash" and then publishing articles like the one above.
Thursday is my software updates night. Just ran the software update software and everything works great on my iMac 27" (running the latest Snow Leopard). Sorry others may be having problems.

FWIW, the two Macs I've updated both work fine with 10.1.1 installed via Software Update.
The problem is likely not with the package per se, but with a corrupt copy on one of many update servers.

Right?
Our machines upgraded just fine through SU.

May hold off updating the other two Macs now that I've seen this article though.
Worked fine on my i5 iMac (early 2010).
same here, 15" MacBook pro as well.
Seems like inaccurate and irresponsible AI reporting.
Wrong. After reading the article, I fired up iTunes, and it immediately crashed without even opening. Fall 2010 MacPro, 6 core, 10.6.5.
Thanks to posters on this forum, I downloaded the new version from Apple's site, installed it and it works fine. AI is exactly right.
