Yes, the Person of the Year distinction is not necessarily an accolade. It's the 'person' (the meaning of which has been stretched in recent years) who, over the past year, has affected the lives of the most people for good or ill.
Did anybody read the article (sorry forgotten the link, maybe will come back to me soon) that Facebook has been the catalyst in 100,000 crimes, some serious, such as murder ?
If this is a proven, then how can he possibly be named TPOY ?
I am proud I am not a member of s%^tbook, and never intend to be, but I do read newspaper articles here in Australia where people are bullied there, some commit suicide because of this, and some sick individuals deface tribute pages with pornographic images.
All I am saying, and its too obvious, is that s&%tbook is the vehicle that allows certain mentally sick and criminally minded to perpetrate their crimes, is a perfect "bullet" for targeting people who may be subjected to all sorts of bulling. Many divorces are a result of it, now most likely these people would divorce anyway, but who knows whether they actually would if such a place did not exist.
I would strongly recommend that people who are members to leave it, as it is used for vetting job applicants, even a bank in Australia used it to lure people who had outstanding debts, as a means of tracking them down. Government agencies and police authorities also access it on a continuous basis.
Remember folks how we said NO to national ID cards, well the Government has something even better and much more powerful, its called Facebook. They can track you without your knowledge and tie in certain attributes found there with their myriad of databases. Its very easy to do.
I'm a programmer, and we tie in our systems to 3rd party vendors over Web links by way of FTP.
Can't see why others won't also do this.
What is happening is that we are being bombarded with far too much information, we just cannot absorb it all, perhaps only a fraction, because of this, we are always compromising (emails are a perfect example). Instead of stopping and taking stock of the solution, we make things worse by being part of the problem of feeding more information into the "cyber machine". We don't take care with this data, and it can never truly removed, don't listen to those that purport the opposite view.
I just don't understand why people do this to themselves.

While Facebook (or any organization) should be treated with a certain amount of distrust, but this, really? There were plenty of legitimate uses for pagers when they got the rap for being instrumental in drug deals. I'm sure telephones have been used to help commit many more crimes than that. The same goes with the internet in general. Some people use cars to drive to their destination to commit crime. I think it's silly to blame the tools based on their misuse by dark side of humanity. People will use whatever tools they have to do what they want. I doubt you'd slow down bullying or even put a dent in crime even if the site was killed.

Those are the stated objectives. But Time violates them often enough that I suspect the pragmatic is more often at work than the principled. Thus, this distinction is probably more aptly titled "Person of the [highest probability to help us sell more magazines this] year".

Yes you make good points, but like most repliers to my post still fail to see the picture. My rant was that Gacebook makes it SO MUCH EASIER and greatly simplifies the process of tracking individuals, and hence those Govt. Establishments can snare many more and on a greatly increased frequency. Wire tapping of phones require warrants, as far as I know. So cannot breach our rights as easily.

What if it's just a change in type of bullying that changed with the times? Is there actual proof that bullying in general is on the rise, or is it just an impression that we get?
