I have hoped for a while that Apple would make a push into content development to see what it can do when it controls the levers of production and distribution of original content:

    * Commissioning a name director to develop a 12-episode series that would distribute exclusively to iTunes/Apple TV customers before it goes to other platforms.

    * Buying a medium-sized newspaper, shutting down the presses, and radically overhauling the paper into an electronic-only local news and advertising venture.

    * Buying a magazine group like Conde Nast and putting a lot of app development and marketing muscle behind brands like the New Yorker, GQ and Vogue that have developed pretty limited/terrible iPhone/iPad apps on their own.

I'd also like to see Apple buy a small cable company or local cable franchise and completely overhaul the set-top box and UI as Apple TV.

Once Apple made some inroads and built new business plans in these markets, they could buy/launch more titles or license the technology and patents to other media companies.

Call me an Apple utopian, but having seen what Apple could do with an MP3 player and a mobile phone, I think there are a lot of other media outlets Apple could apply the same overhaul to.

I'm not looking forward to The Daily, I am however looking forward to the subscription feature to be added. Then the publishers can start offering cheaper subscription for their iPad contents. I just can't pay $4.99 per issue.

Plus we have the new expose on the deplorable health conditions in Apple's Chinese sweatshops. Apple apparently has become the new Evil Empire. Some things are more important than cool technology. I am another everything-Apple user, who will pass. I don't give a shit if Jobso himself has a weekly column, I'm not putting a penny in Murdoch's pocket. That being said, I'm buying the next iPad, just won't be subscribing to "The Daily".

If you will be able to subscribe to written content...

Shouldn't you be able to subscribe to:

    -- Music content

    -- Video/Movie content

    -- Artistic content

    -- App and Games

I don't see any of this happening -- it would not be good for Apple to compete directly against content providers or content delivery providers.

The indirect relationship between Apple and Disney is about as close as they want to get.

Besides... none of these things will meet Apple's profit objectives.

murdoch's news of the world -- now there's a role model for ethics. let's hope he has better people on his staff for this publication. otherwise the app will just be a back door into your ipad so that they can collect data for their sensational stories.

Honestly, you'd make a great Jihadi, one who won't tolerate alternative viewpoints.

You have the freedom to not buy or not to read the Sun, and the right to send letters to the Guardian or the Mirror or the BBC and hundreds of others of outlets denouncing it. Hey, why not start up your own newspaper?

Re:Fox News is a disgrace to impartial journalism.

Agreed, and is there anyone on the planet who disagrees with this, including the presenters at Fox? Fox news is an embarrassment to news reporting, even though it's a 'news' program, it is more of an infotainment program than the Daily show, a comedy program, which effectively lampoons it regularly. This is all general knowledge.

No one is stopping so called left-wing outlets from developing their own app for the iPad. The Guardian have just released a great new app with fabulous subscription price. I haven't heard of anyone who reads the Sunday Times foaming at the mouth about that.

Paid digital content is a tough one - One example that comes to mind is the free USA Today News/Magazine product that I enjoy. Nice native iPad layout - New stories several times each day - Very well done in my opinion and there are many others like this as well . . . Who will want to pay $52 per year for The Daily with so many other interesting and free choices?

    Think about it . . . . . . . . . . .

Apple created a legal alternative to downloads. They did it well and changed an industry but you'd be hard pushed to prove they changed music. No-one at Apple picked up her guitar and wrote a better song than anyone, afaik. Apple will never get into news gathering, political editorial or the like.

The Daily is just showing the way. There is already the Huffington Post, the Guardian etc with excellent content. The fact that Apple leads the way to technically transition News Content distribution to a digital format in no way reflects on Apple politically. If the Daily is a success others will follow. For me, that will be a more interesting story. I am curious if this becomes a successful business model how it will impact on aggregators like Google News.

Well those too I'm sure but the one that I was really looking to doing more often on an iPad was magazines.

I think it's safe to say that the subscription feature won't be limited to written contents. I'm sure Apple will use that feature for their own (rumored) cloud-based iTunes music subscription.

I wouldn't go as far as abandoning Apple. I just won't invest a dime in the Murdoch rag.

Hopefully real news agencies will learn from this and release their own periodicals.

Let me know when Thomson-Reuters has something similar. Until then, I'll pass on anything related to News Corp.

I hope you don't have a job that involves working at a company, where somewhere in the links does business with someone, that has has a friend, who bumped into someone on the subway, that bought a hotdog from a street vendor that read an article from News Corp.

Hmm... do you know Kevin Bacon??? \

Your article states that publishers are frustrated that they can only sell one issue at a time for $4.99 because some restriction imposed by Apple.

However, I have been subscribing to many magazines through Zionio. Each issue automatically comes to my iPad.

    By golly! You're absolutely correct!

Apple should have never chosen "right-wing" providers such as AT&T or Verizon. I mean, how much more "evil" can Apple become? Just the other day, I had to walk over 2 miles to the nearest Apple store in my Birkenstocks and when I finally arrived, I found out to my horror that the Apple store was located on the right side of the street! The exact location and placement of the store was no coincidence I tell you. No way in hell was I going to enter that right-wing store! I angrily put on my Mao cap and proceeded to walk right back home with only a quick stopover at Starbucks where I bought a 7 dollar Latte Espresso.

I hear that Kim Jong Il runs a pretty trendy "left-wing" cell phone service. That will probably be right up your alley and you might want to consider checking them out. If you hurry and sign up within the next 60 days, you'll receive a special edition iPhone that comes pre-packaged with free Che Guevara stickers and a 10"x18" poster commemorating the over 100 million people killed by leftwingers in the 20th century.

As for me, I'll definitely be checking out the Daily app. Hopefully it will become a welcome breath of fresh air, compared to the left-wing fascist Govt slant and propaganda being carried by much of the mainstream media. It's not just about the content of the App, it's about the technology and the new delivery method for this content.

And yes, some things are probably more important than new technology, left-wing paranoia is not among those things. Apple and Macs are used by everybody, regardless of their political ideology, get used to it.

Nice. You didn't change a word from your yesterday post on the topic. Guess that cut and paste thing is a real boon.

Using newspapers and TV stations to influence elections?!? My god, this has certainly never happened before! Certainly the New York Times and MSNBC would never stoop this low. Quick, call the FCC! This must not stand!!!

Actually, to be "fair and balanced," there is at least one cellco that plays the "social responsibility" card: It's called Credo No iPhones, but a few Droids for all you guilt-ridden types (and mostly not even the "fancy ones" so no need to feel over-privileged). A good liberal friend of mine had it - uses, I think, the Sprint towers, but, alas, true believer that she is, even she was still eventually sucked into the evil side of the force by a shiny, squeaky iPhone.

OK, so I get the "liberal equals totalitarian death camp" thing, since it's an idea pumped out 24/7 by the likes of (ironically) Fox News et al. It's deeply ahistorical and suggests willful stupidity, but I get it. It's useful for rallying the troops and rendering every discussion into an apocalyptic war of good against evil, which I guess is a prerequisite for the rightwing mind to orient itself in a rapidly changing world.

But "7 dollar Latte Espresso" from Starbucks? I mean, yeah, it gets used a lot as shorthand for "simpering elitist", but why? There has to be a Starbucks in pretty much every city, town and hamlet of over a couple of thousand people in America, at this point, and they can't all be sustained by a cadre of marxist/fascist/socialist/freedom haters, can they?

The thing is, Starbucks is as mainstream as McDonalds, and even as we speak millions of right thinking rightwing square jawed patriots are right there in line to get their Frappucinos and decaf Lattes. Surely there's something more obviously America hating than Starbucks that ya'll could use? Like, I dunno, Mac use? Wait, that includes Limbaugh. White wine! Nobody drinks white wine but straight up Nazis!

Good point, except it is not really 4G. They call it that so they can sell it as that. Again just a bunch of made up lies.
