Legalization of drugs...

in General Discussion edited January 2014
OK, I am doing a research project on this....

I have read both <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000958"; target="_blank">this</a> thread and the other thread linked to in the first post. I am looking for well, um research that I can use in my paper...

<a href="http://www.norml.org/"; target="_blank">http://www.norml.org/</a>; is a good pro drug laws reform site (natnl org for the reform of marij laws...)

<a href="http://www.drugwarfacts.org/"; target="_blank">http://www.drugwarfacts.org/</a>; is a good "just the facts" oriented site

I need some anti-drug legalization sites (IE ones from the gov't and activits groups)

I know I can just do a google search and get this info, but I was wondering if you guys could give me a unique insite into this rather then just having a machine output websites... any help is welcome! tia!

I'm a member of NORML. I think if you peruse their site, that you'll find links to lots of external organizations that can give you more information. Also, of course <a href="http://www.hightimes.com"; target="_blank">www.hightimes.com</a> has an entire reference section with many many sources that will help you in your search. Californians for Compassionate Use have a very informative site at <a href="http://www.marijuana.org."; target="_blank">www.marijuana.org.</a>

On the other side, <a href="http://www.freevibe.com"; target="_blank">www.freevibe.com</a> and <a href="http://www.whatsyourantidrug.com"; target="_blank">www.whatsyourantidrug.com</a> are the government's teen anti-drug propaganda sites. A more adult themed site is <a href="http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov,"; target="_blank">www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov,</a> which is the home of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Unfortunately I don't really know of any anti-legalization sites other than government-run ones. Maybe people on that side of the argument will be able to help you more there.

By the way... if, of course, you need any personal insight, I can always help you there too. Why, I'm doing some experiments of my own as I type. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

What a laugh. The government provides "propaganda" but an organization like NORML is just a friendly advocacy group?

Here's a fact. The "Medical Marijuana" movement is a veiled effort to take advantage of the sick and dyeing to get drugs legal so pot heads can smoke it. Anyone how advocates for "Medical Marijuana" is in fact a spineless coward latching on to the sick and dying for their own selfish goal.

Those sites are propaganda. NORML uses propaganda too, like their Bloomberg ads. I think you were reading too much into my choice of words. I'm going with a standard Webster definition of the word - no baggage attached, thanks.

On the freevibe site take a look at "Why people take drugs." This is not informed research. This is speculation with an intended result - scaring teenagers into not doing drugs. Take a look at the Q&A section. There are some seriously ridiculous questions ("will ecstacy make a hole in your brain?") and instead of giving factual responses (like "No!") they give a vague response with a link to their page about E. Fear is a powerful tool, and the government knows this. Whether people aren't doing drugs because they've weighed the consequences for themselves and have made up their own minds, or out of fear, their job is done either way.

As for your opinions about the medical marijuana proponents, I'm sure there's more than a few sick and dying medical marijuana users who would disagree with you. Not that I'm about to try to change your mind.

Yea and a lot of sick and dying think acupuncture or homeopathic "medication" will cure them too.

There's nothing wrong with drugs and taking drugs. Drugs after all, a substance that is used to gain specific condition on the body.

People have been using drugs for thousand of years.

What is wrong is when drug is used incorrectly. That's why they called ?drug abuse?.

    Quoth Scott H, PhD!?!

Man, you sure take the shine of that title.

That's about the stupidest thing i've heard this week, and you're up against some strong competition.

Sure, there are lots of potheads who happily jump onto the 'Medical Marijuana' bandwagon just because they like smoking weed, but that hardly has a bearing on the fundamental point that marijuana appears to have some not insignificant medical benefits, and they shouldn't be ignored due to some knee-jerk "Pot is a drug and drugs are evil" attitude. Cocaine is used medically as an anesthetic, as are various opiates (Heroin is an opiate), and those are far 'worse' drugs than marijuana.

If marijuana is the most effective treatment for glaucoma, if it is the only thing that can let somebody dying of AIDS eat a meal without vomiting, if it can ease the suffering of someone with terminal cancer, why should people not fight to allow it's medical use?

Why? Because scott_h_phd said so, that's why!

Burning a weed and inhaling the smoke is no way to deliver "medication" to anyone. You advocate a method of treatment many patients would reject out of hand. What kind of way to treat sick people is that? Get a brain.

Medication is something a doctor prescribes in carefully measured doses. Where the side effects and drug interactions are known. Not burned up and inhaled with other toxic fumes. Also what is the AIDS patient with asthma supposed to do? What about that AIDS patient that cannot get stoned and keep his/her job. You advocate a method of treatment that many people cannot use and may be dangerous for many patients. Get a brain. Doesn?t take a Ph.D. to figure that one out or maybe it does.

Pot may well have some benefit but the proper way to deliver a needed medication is not by chopping up and smoking it.

It's true that some medications are delivered in carefully measured doses, but this is often because they are very dangerous above a certain level, and careful regulation of intake is necessary. However, some medications, such as herbal extracts and mild painkillers (pot seems to qualify as both), are prescribed in vaguer terms (take one asprin.. or two, if necessary.. with the usually caveat of not taking more than 4 in a 24 hour period).

Secondly, why do you assume that medical marijuana would not be carefully graded as to potency, and prescriped with regard to this? Do you expect a doctor to present his patient with a sack 'o' weed and say "Party time, dude!"? No. He/she would inform the patient when and how to take the medicine, just as with any other prescription drug.

Thirdly, why do you assume that smoking is the only way marijuana can be ingested? Pot can be eaten or swallowed - it just needs to have been soaked in a non-polar substance such as ethanol or a lipid. While pharmaceutical companies do currently produce pure THC in tablet form, THC is only one of several compounds found in Cannabis resin that seem to have medicinal properties. Therefore, an extract of marijuana, in a tincture (drinkable) or tablet form is both feasable and seems preferable to a THC tablet or to smoking joints.
