Less than a day after the Verizon iPhone 4 went on sale to the general public, both Apple and Verizon have pushed back the estimated shipping deadline for new orders to Feb. 18.

By early afternoon on Wednesday, Apple updated its online store to say that new Verizon iPhone 4 orders would ship "by February 18th." In addition, Verizon's website states that orders have an "Expected Shipment date" of Feb. 18.

The delay for new orders signals strong demand for the CDMA variant of the iPhone 4, set to debut on Verizon's network on Thursday. Apple relaunched its online store overnight to offer customers the ability to order the Verizon iPhone 4, just a few days after an initial, limited run of preorders were available to existing Verizon customers.

Apple and Verizon saw also strong demand in that first round of preorders last week, as stock quickly sold out in less than 24 hours.

Those who don't want to wait an extra week for their Verizon iPhone 4 will have other options come Thursday morning. Apple has announced that its retail stores will have inventory available and will open at 7 a.m. local time, while the new CDMA handset will also be available at more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communication Stores across the U.S.

Sales of the hotly anticipated handset will also take place at some Best Buy retail stores and nearly 600 Walmart locations on launch day. The Verizon iPhone 4 costs $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB capacity with a two-year service contract.

Expectations for the Verizon iPhone 4 launch are high, with one Wall Street analyst predicting on Wednesday that Apple will sell more than one million handsets in its first week of availability. Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets said he believes Apple will sell all of the initial inventory it will be able to manufacture, and could sell more than 10 million total Verizon iPhones in calendar 2011.

Oh come on! We all know that Apple is doing this just to make us believe that sales are really strong! It's the oldest marketing gimmick in the book!
