Apple and Guitar Center partner up to offer GarageBand workshops

Beginning this Saturday, Apple and musical instrument retailer Guitar Center will begin a partnership to offer weekly workshops teaching customers how to use a Mac and the GarageBand application to record music.

"Even if you don't know an insert from an input, modern technology makes it easy to produce great-sounding recordings at home. Guitar Center's free Recording Made Easy workshops will show you how," the retailer publicized on its website.

The workshops will take place in a four week rotation on Saturdays from 10am-11am at all of Guitar Center's 216 stores. The first class, Signal Flow and MIcrophone Techniques, takes place on May 7. Additional lessons include Virtual Instruments and Loops, Effects and Mixing and Publishing.

Customers looking to register for the workshop are redirected to Apple's Seminars & Events page. Seating for the workshops is limited, as some popular locations, such as the Guitar Center in Hollywood, Calif., have already run out of space for this week's seminar.

Guitar Center has for years been an Authorized Apple Pro Audio Reseller, offering Macs at its stores.

Apple most recently updated GarageBand in October when it introduced iLife '11. New features in GarageBand '11 include Flex Time, Groove Matching, new piano and guitar lessons and a "How did I play?" evaluation feature. iLife'11 retails for $49.00 for a single license, or $79.00 for a family pack. GarageBand is also available individually from the Mac App Store for $14.99.

Though not mentioned in conjunction with the Guitar Center workshops, Apple released a version of GarageBand for the iPad in March. The music making and recording app features touch instruments such as the grand piano, organ, guitars, drums and bass and offers 8 track recording.

GarageBand also works on the original iPad. I have it on mine.

Sounds cool for beginners. I used to love going to GC; now I dread it. Sadly, I simply outgrew (the quality of) most of the stuff they sell there. In the world of pro audio, most of the stuff GC sells is at the "netbook" level of audio gear, not at the "Mac Pro" level.

    Heh. That would be me.

I can already get music via commissions of work done by someone else, but I'd like to be able to supplement that with own work in some cases.

That's pretty exciting. My 3 yo was doing pretty damn well on a junior drum kit at Guitar Center this past Sunday. When we have some spare money may get music lessons for both our girls. I have Garageband on the original iPad right now and it works well. Love my Korg iMS20 too
