Kernel panic after 10.6.7 upgrade

Hello, this problem just started this morning.

Ran an update last night. I think it was 10.6.7.

Then this morning the screen freezes and I shut down the machine (MacBook Pro 17").

On power up I get the sound, apple logo, the screen dims and a dark box with the power icon appears with the message:

"you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again"

I tried resetting the pram, safe mode with no success.

Has this happened to anyone out there?

What else can I try before taking it to a store to have it looked at?

You could try running fsck on the drive in Single User Mode if you know how, or if you don't, restart the Mac on the restore disc and run Disk Utility.

The update possibly hasn't installed correctly. You can start up from your system disc and do an archive install, then try doing the update again but instead of using the software update feature, download the standalone updater that is on a .dmg file. Make sure you have plenty of space free on your hard drive before installing an update.
