Do you play an X, what about a Y?

I think that mac users are a creative lot so when we arent fawning over plastic that isnt opaqe or when we arent in photoshop...who here plays an instrument?

I'm a bit of a showoff in the list but hey...I like to play. I play Violin, Viola (yeah, they are DIFFERENT

), piano, cello, and bass. What about you?

I have a lot of instruments but I don't really play any of them very well.

I think there are lots of different musicians on AI.... surprised nobody else responded yet.

Yes, I play. Piano and synths (big fan of the Nord Lead). I also program synths - hardware ones... that used to be an artform once.

I want to learn guitar but I don't have time for lessons. Anyone know any good online courses (that are FREE damn you FREE!)?

Being in a band for as long as I was, it's only natural that you pick up and play instruments that were never really your first choice.

First thing I learned to play was the sax. Then the trumpet.

Then I realized chicks like guitar players,

so I taught myself to play that by learning as many songs I could by ear. Bass, drums and piano followed.

Now, the thing that sucks is, I don't own a sax, a trumpet, a bass, drums or a piano. So I guess I really just play the guitar.

Started playing guitar at 11 years old (33 now). Several years later, was in a band with some high school buddies and we had three guitarists but no bass player.

Being a McCartney fan (and aware/appreciative of how the bass can propel and add to a song), I "volunteered" to be the bass guy, and immediately rented a cheap Precision Bass knock-off from Hondo (in canary yellow, no less) and proceeded to learn to play bass (1s and 3s, with fingers, etc.).

Cool thing is, they both helped the other: learning bass made me a better guitar player (timing, rhythm, etc.). Being a guitar player made me a better bass player (I know the neck well enough that I could boogie around with McCartney/Entwistle ease, and wasn't afraid to play two or more notes together sometimes).

I know just enough music theory to be dangerous (how chords are constructed, what makes chords major, minor, sevenths, diminished, major sevenths, etc.), and also know the notes on the frets, so that helps too.

Can tinkle around on a piano okay. Know how to chord and play basic, clean progressions and can do a pretty decent (although slighty half-ass) Jerry Lee Lewis things (walking boogie left hand and hammering, rock 'n' roll/"Chuck Berry on piano" licks with the right hand.

That's it: guitar, bass and SOME keyboard.

Oh, and mandolin.

i wanted to be billy joel when i was little. so, after asking for 2 yrs, my mom signed me up for piano lessons. (i also wanted to b a magician for a while, but thats another story)

i got bored of it, and after 3 yrs tookup guitar lessons. teacher didn't really teach though. it was the same nun who taught me piano, and she focused lessons on the other students (who were all learning piano). after a few years and after seeing one of the most amazing shows i've ever seen (Ain't Nothin' But the Blues at lincoln center, i think its through now though) i started up guitar lessons again, then focusing on scales and theory. i haven't really played much since i quit my lessons again (about 2 yrs ago). that show changed the way i listen to music though. i love the blues.
