I said one simple remote. Not a geeky remote some geeks even have trouble with. Not a universal remote, but a universal TV - from Apple. That's the key. Inputs will be a thing of the past. Within three years expect XBox and Playstation TV's to be released.
Just a friendly logic note: saying "Apple has transformed x before", or "Apple has a habit of surprising us with rethinking x" or "Everybody said Apple would never do x and then they did" so that therefore an Apple branded TV is more likely or even inevitable is entirely specious.
You can't argue from a general idea of Apple's penchant for innovation to a particular desired innovation. If you could, we could say with some confidence that Apple is shortly to introduce a DSLR, a full-on game console, a line of AirPrint enabled printers, their own amplifiers and speakers to compliment AirPlay, and for all I know a microwave just because the UI is ripe for an overhaul.
Anything Apple has done to date tells us very little about what they might do next, aside from pretty assuredly being in the computer/digital media neck of the woods (so I guess we can maybe rule out the microwave, although they said it would never happen so it will.)
OK? Argue the merits, by all means, but don't resort to the tired old "That's what they said about the iPhone", because that just means Apple might do anything-- which is completely different from Apple might do something in particular.
A subscription iTunes plan would be needed IMO. We might see it coming with the new iCloud service? But I also believe (and Apps on ATV might help this problem too) news (local or otherwise) and sports would be a problem. It wasn't for me, but that's all I hear from people when you talk to them about cutting the cable.
All that at a near discounted price typical of the consumer electronics market? That's a tall order, but I will say that cheap devices are Apple's new game. Maybe and if they do even some of the above with reasonable hopes for more in the future, I will be (admittedly) first in line to buy one for sure.
I've long argued the thing this TV needs and the reason it could be being held up is that Apple can't get a subscription TV Show deal ironed out. If Apple had a subscription deal for TV Shows, like that all you can eat plan talked about before this TV would probably already exist for them. And live news and sports would be mega-important to people, but like you say Apps could solve this. Apps could also solve the streaming non-iTunes file formats issues to iTV also. This would be a biggie if there was never an App for this. But the subscription deal is the king issue here. If they had subscription then they could launch iTV with iTunes TV.
After skimming through the comments, I would like to add the following thoughts.
1) With iOS5 coming out this fall with a completed airplay, the stage is set for living room domination.
2) 1080i iTunes is coming (IIRC)
3) Most people use their receivers for nothing more than a video switch and 7.1, the age of the receiver is done, but no one has realized it.
4) TV's suck for sound as vendors protect receiver business, apple does not have a receiver business to protect.
5) With Jonathan Ive, who in the heck is going to rebrand jack????
6) Many of the flagship stores are being remodeled/expanded, why, media rooms to demo a TV??
7) Big push for bigger new Apple stores, again, TV sets to show off??
Apple is not going to create a me-too, rebranded thing, I suggest they are in the perfect position to make most of the wife's in America happy, a single remote control.
Create a gorgeous, minimal bezel TV with a single wire down to a modest mac mini/second gen apple TV box, minimal size for heat dissipation from reasonably good sound. That box would have 7.1 audio outs, 3-5 HDMI in, Ethernet, 802.11, USB and maybe IR out, and maybe an analog input. And of course an A5 based apple TV built in.
As with everything thing else they done, from the iPod, Touch, iPod Video, iPad, Macbook Air, they waited until just the moment when they could introduce a revolutionary product. I suspect this fall/winter is the time for a TV.
Considering it will be a new niche, with the capabilities and good sound, Apple margins will be decent. And it will be a gateway for more iPad, iPod and iTune sales.

I don't think Apple can roll out a TV until ATV2 is perfect, and I don't think it is.

Rentals from iTunes are a lot more expensive than my local video store, they are lower quality, and have poorer sound.
And if I purchase movies, I can get them cheaper locally, or from Amazon than I can from Apple.
