Larry Ponemon, CEO of the Privacy Council, said he was consulted for advice in January by an attorney for a national grocery chain, which in the wake of Sept. 11, had voluntarily delivered up its customer loyalty accounts to the federal government.

"It was not a malicious act, but it was more about feeling they had to do something to help the government look for the bad guys," said Ponemon, who could not reveal the name of the chain. <hr></blockquote>

Geez Larry..and YOU are supposed to be a preponent of Privacy. I know I'll never support this boneheads organization. Ah such Civic Responsibility! "We're helping the Gov look for Bad Guys".

[quote] Jonathan Mayes, a spokesman for Safeway Inc., which operates almost 1,800 supermarkets across the country, said Safeway does not "sell or lease any personal identity information to any outside company." <hr></blockquote>

Good Safeway is the card I use the most and I'd fire them quick if they were selling my data to the FBI.

Use fake information and pay with cash.

To the people of Brookshires and every other chain in the area, my father is named <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/profiles/profile/1803.html"; target="_blank">Merton Hanks</a>. He lives at 1432 Broadway and changes a few letters in his SS#.

Anyone who gives grocery stores such information either doesn't care (valid) or is stupid.

Fake info or not the idea of companies giving your data up as some token of Civic responsibility turns my stomach. The FBI needs to be working on REAL leads..I swear that dept has screwed up so much lately when the real info is right under their noses.

I read about this in the Village Voice (www.villagevoice.com) last week while I was in NYC. Apparently, the FBI didn't ask for the info, so I'm not sure that it's fair to blame them...

I did some work for a company here in the UK a few years ago who record all your data, then send you special offer through the post depending on what you buy.

It really works thay claim that they get a 78% take up rate on the offers.

I have not used a card since thay have to much infoon you.

I hate grocery stores that force you to have one of their stupid cards to get decent prices on foods. If you are going to offer the food at that price just label it as such and do without the card. I refuse to shop in stores that require cards to get the real prices.

My wife has a "go to" fake name that she uses. I give out a fake address that doesn't exist in Chicago. When I move to a new place at the end of this month I'll get a new card under the name Santos L. Helper.
