I just got back from Texas

If you read my Rangers thread then you already know that I just got back but here we go anyway. I spent the last week there and most likely none of you noticed my absence. Anyway, this was my first trip to Texas and all I can say is it's F*ing awesome!!! The Alamo Dome, AA Center, and the Ballpark @ Arlington are some of the best stadiums in America. Dallas has a great skyline and feels safe when you are downtown. San Antonio is practically like Disneyland and is great for tourists and really easy to get around. The Alamo is sonething every American must visit. The state capitol is one of the nicest I have seen. I was very impressed with the Lone Star State. Sure beats Portland. I even got one of those "Don't Mess With Texas" t-shirts. Their freeway system kicks ass too. It is really easy to get around Texas. Maybe I'll go to college down there.

PS. Could some Texan please explain to me WTF is with the traffic lights?

PPS. I also spent a couple days in GA and SC and I must say that I met some of the most ignorant people on Earth. When I was in a Denny's in Atlanta some guy comes up to me and goes "Hey Yank. The war ain't over yet, just you see." Then when I was at the Hardees (Carls Jr.), The place is "Closed bekuze of a computer failur. Thank you for your compression." Oh ya, and they also have those nasty grits. I have plenty more stories but my fingers hurt But I will tell you that I'm never going back to the South.

the freeway system doesn't kick ass. i'm sorry, but your mistaken. it's terrible. especially around austin. the signeage is awful. ive almost died many times driving through that place. i dont know anything about portland, and maybe its better than there. but anything relating to traffic is simply cr*p in this state.

and whats wrong w/ the traffic lights?

Ya there were traffic problems in Austin but everywhere else it was fine, and I did drive in rush hour many times. As for the traffic lights, they're F*ing sideways. But it doesn't bug me; it just seems kinda weird. The signeage is much better than Portland so I didn't have any problems.

ohh, yeah i dont know why theyre sideways. i noticed that when i first moved here from california, but got used to it pretty fast. no big deal...

the reason that austin is so bad is cause they refuse to build more freeways and roads because of the population increase. they think that if they dont improve the roads to support more people, less people will move there and some will move away. great texas logic, eh?

i remember once while driving through there, the onramp to a freeway gave about 10 feet to merge before turning into a concrete wall. 10 feet to squeeze between 2 eighteen wheelers. which would you rather hit?

yeah, i dont know why i ever go back. its the only place i despise driving through in this state. but its a good place to practice and see just how good a driver i really am. i havent died yet, so i guess im pretty good.

although i did get in my only wreck there, back when i was learning to drive...

damn traffic going from 60 to 0 in a few seconds. ugh...i hate traffic...

Actually, we're trying to build more infrastructure but the population skyrocketed a lot faster than what the area was prepared for thanks to the boom of the tech industry in the area.

Bastards like Eskimo are to blame!

I love Texas myself, and our highway system has to be good because the state is so freakin' huge.

the problem is that there are too many people in the main cities w/ no good infrastructure. there are no subway systems, or good rail systems to get people around. couple that w/ the love affair with those shitty trucks, SUVs, and suburbans, the pollution is sky rocketting. the people here dont care at all about what they drive and how wastefull they are, its sickening. i drive a honda and get ridiculed cause im not driving a big-assed truck. morons. driving their lifted trucks as a car, spitting out all kinds of pollution, and they laugh at innovation and efficiency like japanese and german automotives. the people here are so damn stupid and stubborn sometimes. "bigger is better" my ass...

why does noone here care about how dirty our cars are and how theres no movement towards changing that or finding a cleaner alternative??

You have obviously never been to Wrigley Field, or Chicago for that matter. That city has the best skyline in the U.S.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Atlanta is the asshole of the universe.

Just fly straight to Texas next time, no need to go into the icky South.

Austin traffic sucks. They never planned accordingly for the potential growth of the city. Every other major city in the US has some sort of beltway or expressway to bypass the downtown of the city, but they never put one in Austin. Now we are spending millions and millions of dollars to try to rectify that situation, although a lot of the construction is being held up by environmental concerns. My commute on US 183 sucks, I can't even imagine how people can drive on that parking lot that is I-35 every day. Drivers here aren't that nice either in my opinion. At least in New York people acknowledge when you let them in front of you by waving.

Did you spend anytime in Austin? We have the live musics and shiznit. We don't have a nasty little creek with a big sidewalk next to it like San Antonio but we have 20,000+ female college students .

Texas is cool (well actually damn hot) though, I agree with you having spent time in Alaska and New York.

    hot = good

    hot + humid = evil

if you want perfect weather, perfect girls, and perfect beaches, just go west. there's this state called california that you should check out. if you think this shithole called texas is nice, you'll fall in love with california...

I've been to California dozens of times and Texas is better. It's obvious that none of you have ever been to Portland. Our infrastructure is absolute shit. Yes, we do have a rail line but it runs right next to our main east-west freeway which is only 3 lanes (sometimes 2) in each direction. Widening that freeway is not possible anymore because they built the thing right next to the freeway, and congestion will only get worse due so the 300,000 more people we will have by 2005. And all the observations I have made are me comparing things to Portland. Compared to Portland, the Dallas skyline is really nice. And the traffic and freeways (except Austin) are very good. I did also notice lots of freeway construction in Austin so hopefully that congestion will be relieved soon, unlike Portland where we are actually considering removing lanes from I-5 so we can have more green spaces

Oh and Eskimo, I really loved that "nasty little creek." And I never found the drivers to be mean. Infact, they were quite polite, always letting people in. But I just guess that goes to show you that it all depends on what you are used to.

well i guess there's a first for everything...

i've never met anyone who's been there who didn't fall in love with at least one part of california. they have a piece of everything in that state. all we have here are cows...

    and humidity...

    and rednecks...

and POS trucks and american cars...

    and cows...

    am i missing anything...?

Come up to Portland and you'll be thanking whatever god you believe in (ya, I'll count Steve Jobs) that you live in Texas. Oh ya, and I don't mind big trucks, American cars, and hot weather.

i'm not comparing portland to texas, you are. im just saying that california, although its quite a bit more expensive, has much more to offer than texas. i've been to vancouver and victoria, and thought it was quite beautiful up there (although a bit cold during the summer).

Ok, fine you like California, and I like Texas. I guess I'm just used to the cows and you aren't (we have them up here too). I also like the wide open spaces that Texas has and California does not.

    haha

actually i am used to the cows.

and obviously you've only been to the major cities of california, cause they have cows there too, and they have quite a lot of open space. if you've ever driven from san francisco to LA, you'd know that pretty much that whole stretch (6 hours) is wide open agriculture, texas-type land, except it doesnt have this crappy weather.

sorry, i'm just tired of this state. anything good we have here, they have over there also. but we dont have many of their pros...

oh well. i guess im stuck here for at least 5 more years (last year of undergrad+grad school). i'm just bitter cause ive been stuck here for so long.

I've been to the riverwalk 3 or 4 times now. And for the life of me I can't figure out what the hell everyone thinks is so great about it. It's a freaking sidewalk next to a slow moving, brown 'river' that isn't even that large or impressive. It's not freaking venice or anything, I just don't get it.

[quote]actually i am used to the cows.

I'm sure you are... Every crappy thing you listed about Texas is due to the fact that you are living in College Station . Give those cows some rest and try out the real cities with real women
