My Lousy Day

Well, my day was generally just lousy today. Not for any horrible reason like someone dying, but for lots of little things that added up quickly.

I guess I'll just run down my day.

4:00 AM - Wake up to go to work. I have to get in early to make up for time I missed at the beginning of the week.

5:00 AM - Stuck in traffic on Route 3 and had to take crappy old van instead of my Jeep Cherokee. Since I left so early, Route 3 South is still closed from the work they were doing the night before.

6:00 AM - After witnessing two accident scenes I finally get to work much later than I expected. It's by far the worst traffic I've had on a Friday in months.

6:15 AM - My PC will not boot. It appears that we have lost power overnight.

6:30 AM - My PC is acting really strangely. I got it up and running, only for it to crash really quickly.

6:35 AM - Take phone guy to do phone upgrades. I don't know why he showed up so early.

7:00 AM - Still don't know what's up with my PC. Now it's 'blue screening'. Oh wait, WinXP doesn't blue screen. What is this screen then?

7:30 AM - Declare PC dead. Got it up and running enough for people to get files off of it.

7:35 AM - Co-worker shows up and asks why the network in her half of the building is down.

7:45 AM - Fix network problem (so I think), go back to desk to deal with now dead PC.

8:15 AM - Realize more people are having network problems. Finally realize DHCP server was screwed. Switch to backup.

8:45 AM - Finally get last of people who lost network connectivity back up and running.

9:00 AM - Sign up for college courses via phone.

10:00 AM - Boss of my boss calls to tell me that he has files on my PC that he needs and to not rebuild the machine until he can get them off.

11:00 AM - Baseball players announce they are going on strike August 30th. Season likely to be over in 2 weeks.

11:30 AM - PC crashes and burns. I could not recover it. Boss of my boss did not get what he wanted off despite my warnings.

12:00 PM - Try putting HD into co-worker's machine as a slave drive. Way too many errors on the drive, 99% of sectors unreadable.

1:00 PM - Get call from college that unless I clear my financial block 'NOW', all of my courses will be dropped. Forced to leave work.

1:40 PM - Give check of nearly $5000 to college. Officially broke.

3:00 PM - Get home and answer emails and voice mail including one that says that the savings bonds I deposited in my bank account yesterday which were supposed to be in today might not be there until Monday. PLEASE don't let the check to school bounce.

5:00 PM - Have to take my sister to work. She's angry at me for something I had nothing to do with. All I did was try and be the nice guy and take her to work. Still don't know what it was about.

7:00 PM - Thunderstorms enter the area but they are not supposed to be severe.

7:15 PM -These thunderstorms are huge and lightning explodes the sprinkler controls in the basement. I'm talking about a literal explosion. I've never heard anything louder in my life.

7:30 PM - Still under seige from thunderstorms when we realize that my television is dead. I bought the TV when I was 9 with my own money that I saved up. It took me a long time back then too. I loved that TV.

9:00 PM - Realization that our well might not be operating. We're still figuring out that one now. Also found 5 or 6 spots where lightning hit the ground near the house.

All in all, it wasn't a horrible day, but it wasn't good by any means. I'm thankful that no one died or was injured, and that nothing was really destroyed (and it definitely could have happened in those storms). I just had to vent my frustration because it seemed that nothing went my way today. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Add to that: Apple did NOT introduce a new Newton, either!

We are all blessed, I agree with FShip.

I feel your pain bigtime with the school financing. I won't be able to walk straight for years after the how's-your-father I get from the Uni every semester.

Sorry about your day, Fran. But look at it this way: any day you wake up on this side of the grass is a good one. ...As for MLB I'm close to actually wanting them to go on strike. I saw a picture in the paper this morning of a fan at Wrigley holding a sign that read, "If you strike, don't bother coming back". That's about how I feel these days. $3.5 B and these jerks can't figure out how to divvy it up. Ah, screw 'em. They're just not worth it.

    1st *

that many near misses from nature is about equal odds for a solo lottery win.

go buy some tickets and see if the universe is funnin' with ya. seriously.

worst case... bad day is followed by a loss of 50 bucks.

best case... you can share with us, or buy out moto

i've personally had main house power baked by one nearby bolt (while on the phone - which kept on), then the next bolt baked the phone, complete with actual smoke. and yes, unusually, decided to gamble that week. bonus payday.

    2nd *

take some photos of them zap holes before they disappear (ideally you did that night with the smoke still rising and the nearby sand still fusing into newly baked glass)

unless you were too smart for your own good earlier and all your fancy electronics were well protected on surge/spike/UPS boxes (methinks they might be after these events, until you move)

combine newly toasted yard pics with any recently defective technology --> insurance windfall. (if sprinklers hosed your TV, maybe you're hosed... but couldn't the TV have been fried by the same lightningwhose percussive clap <remember that whole speed of light-vs-sound thing> popped off the puddlemakers a moment later?)

please note that i'm neither condoning, nor counselling any sort of insurance flim-flam... just noting that sensitive electronics can be sent to that great upgrade/recycle-bin in the sky by acts of zues.

and just think of the bad hair days your gophers now suffer
