Apple to hold media event hosted by CEO Tim Cook on Oct. 4 - report

Apple is now expected to hold a media event on Tuesday, Oct. 4 presided over by its new chief executive, Tim Cook, to introduce the company's fifth-generation iPhone.

Citing sources close to the situation, John Paczkowski of All Things D reported Wednesday that Apple's annual iPhone introduction is set to be held in less than two weeks. Sources also reportedly said that "Cook is certain to preside over the iPhone 5 rollout."

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has, in the past, been the man to usually host such events, but he resigned from his position in August. In 2009, during a medical leave of absence by Jobs, it was Schiller who handled the presentation to debut Apple's iPhone 3GS, not Cook.

But if Schiller were to present again for this year's later-than-usual iPhone event, Paczkowski said that it "would undercut Cook's new role and reinforce public perception" that Apple will be a very different company without Jobs.

"So, like his predecessor and as Jobs's right-hand man and chosen successor, Cook is expected to be the main presenter at all big Apple media events going forward," he wrote.

While Cook has not been a major part of Apple's product introductions, he has, in the past as chief operating officer, spoken extensively during Apple's quarterly earnings conference calls. In that role he has discussed the financials of Apple and fielded questions from Wall Street analysts, while Jobs typically did not participate.

A media event on Oct. 4 would place Apple's so-called iPhone 5 on track for a mid-October sale date, as has been rumored. AppleInsider reported earlier this month that AppleCare preparations have hinted that iOS 5 -- the next-generation mobile operating system expected to power the iPhone 5, as well as the iPhone 4 and iPad -- may release around Oct. 10, while the CEO of a French wireless carrier suggested Apple's next iPhone will go on sale in his country Oct. 15, a Saturday.

The Golden Master build of iOS 5 is expected to be released to handset assemblers next week, allowing the software to be installed on fifth-generation iPhone software. Typically, Golden Master means the code is identical to what eventually becomes the final public release.

I place my bet still at September 27:

    - Apple's favorite location for these events, the Moscone center is booked at October 4

    - There is a mysterious gap in their list of events around Sept 27....

Nice detective work. Looks like all 3 buildings are reserved for Oracle over the 4th. yet there is nothing on the 27th. But why would Apple mislead the media? If this release is not the same one given to the media, surely one of them would leak the real date in short time.

Only one slight problem with the 27th as the day. They have not sent invites yet. They attempt to give everyone at least a week notice to make plans. They can't call it on the 26th and expect many people to drop what their doing to come. So they have really missed the cutoff date for it.

If they do it at the Moscone center its going to be next week. And Apple didnt mislead anything because they havent announced it yet.

I would have to agree with this. If this rumor is true, I would expect that we see the invite announcement today or tomorrow. I was expecting to see the invite announcement last week actually. I'm suspicious of this primarily because I really thought that they would have the event before the end of September. We should know something pretty soon here one way or the other.

I've been betting on September 27th for over a month now and then going on sale on Saturday, October 1st.

The invites thing is the only fly in that ointment but I still haven't given up on the 27th.

Don't be sad yet. It's just speculation at this point as to who will be presenting. Personally, I'd be surprised if Jobs was entirely absent the stage.

My wife and I are still struggling hard with our old busted up, barely working 3G phones. Total hoopties at this point. I will be camping out to get the new iPhone5's for us. Can't wait, but I will !

If it's a major product upgrade my guess is they will hold it at the Moscone so the journalists can play with the products afterwards. Media event on 27th or 28th, products released on Wed 5 Oct to tie in with the whole "five" theme (iPhone 5, iOS 5, etc).

As cool as it would be to have Jobs present, I think they will find it important to show confidence in a post Jobs Apple. Maybe a small cameo like a text from him to demo the new message service.

Great idea. But overall Cook has to be seen to be doing the big task himself. Time to step up to the Keynote plate.

Apple might do it at their own campus to keep things tightly under wraps. Like y'all said, it could still be Moscone. Hard to say at this stage.

Maybe because it's Cook's first big "do" they might keep it at Apple so they have max control over the presentation and hardware... Keeping the guest list highly selective, that will drive the frenzy and hype up even more than if they had a big venue.
