When Eminem first came into the mainstream, Moby had a problem with his lyrics and music. SO this dates back a while, not just recently. I think what he did at the VMAs was hilarious.
He's also a hypocrite. He churns out huge reams of homophobic, anti-gay lyrics then at a concert he duets with Elton John. Is he repressing something? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
Please post some of his homophobic lyrics so we can judge for ourselves. People keep mentioning this, but the few songs that have received wide radio airplay don't seem to be all that homophobic to me. Maybe I just have a bad memory?
Yes, I think a lot of what eminem does can fall into the "this is so bad it's actually fun" group.
Oh please, to quote some of his lyrics would mean I'd have to know them and that would entail actually listening in depth to one of his songs or, dare I say it, actually buying one of his albums :eek:
Nevertheless I'm sure there are other people who know his songs better than I who can clarify their content. They wouldn't play one of his more offensive songs on the radio or they would at least heavily edit it.

They got a nice PDF you can read with all his lyrics. Interestingly, some of the highlighted text appears to be supportive of gays while some does not. Yet Eminem is a caricature, I'd be equally weary of those who agree with him as those who would critise him.
Still, I understand the confusion. In terms of it's effetiveness, modern celebrity as a performance art caricature really shames virtually [but not] every high-brow attempt at life/art mind bending. Wire rimmed professors and geeky black t-shirt and pajama pant students can only dream of the effectiveness of an Eminem. The message isn't real, the target of so much bile or admiration (depending on your bent) is a character. You should probably suspect anyone who wants to criticise or praise him too much -- in the same way that you uncomfortably ease away from the middle aged lady at the grocery store who insists the soap-opera plots are 'real' and that the Soap Digest is 'news.' Only a handful of dramatists in a given period could conjure characters with the same effectiveness. Kaufmann never died, yet today most celebs are also virtually unaware that they themselves are myths. They disappear in their roles and most never emerge.
I believe nothing, so it's sometimes hard for people to understand why I might agree that Eminem is homophobic yet not care to correct it, or even believe that it should be corrected at all. A drama has villains, if they don't have anything repulsive about them, then they aren't very good villains, are they?
The world (as it is absorbed through media) is just WWF writ with a [small] touch more subtlety.
Yes, celebrities can be more effective when people care. I remember with the sex pistols releasing their version of "God save the queen". They were idolised by the punk masses and had a big impact partly because they were arrested for playing that song on the queens silver jubilee.
my 11 year old sister has begun listening to eminem, and i just found out about this today. i personally think he's a piece of sh*t with some very extreme lyrics. should i be concerned about her? im in college, so dont have much influence anymore, but i dont believe his crap is something an 11 year old should be hearing...
