Apple may hold iPhone 5 event in smaller venue on Cupertino campus

Apple will reportedly use a more intimate setting on its Cupertino campus to reveal its next-generation smartphones to members of the media early next month, forgoing its historical practice of utilizing large exhibition halls in downtown San Francisco.

That's according to sources close to the company speaking to the Wall Street Journal's All Things D blog -- the same publication who claimed earlier this month that Apple would hold the event on Tuesday October 4th.

That said, it's not clear why Apple has chosen not to continue its tradition of renting out large venues like San Francisco's Moscone Center or Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA). The rumored Oct. 4th date does conflict with Oracle's OpenWorld conference, which is being held at the Moscone Center and surrounding hotels from the 2nd to the 6th of October.

"Perhaps the release date was too much of a moving target to risk booking a large space like [YBCA], which has hosted a number of big product unveils in the past," said All Things D's John Paczkowski.

"Perhaps, the company felt a more intimate venue was best for newly installed CEO Tim CookÂ?s first media event," he continued.Â*"Perhaps YBCA was simply already booked. Whatever the reason, the world will get its first look at the next iPhone at AppleÂ?s Town Hall Auditorium in early October."

Unlike the YBCA and Moscone Center, which can accommodate thousands of guests, the Apple Town Hall Auditorium is only fitted to house roughly a couple hundred. As such, space for the event and the number of journalists permitted to attend is expected to be extremely limited.

Despite its smaller size, however, the venue has hosted a number of landmark events for Apple over the past 5 years, serving as launch pad for the company's iPhone developer program and first unibody MacBook Pros in 2008, iPhone Software 3.0 in 2009, and the redesigned MacBook Airs and iPhone 4 "Antennagate" press conference in 2010.

It was also used in 2006 for the introduction of new Mac minis and the now defunct iPod Hi-Fi, as well as again in 2007 for new iMacs.

As AppleInsider reported on Saturday, the new fifth-generation iPhone software and hardware unveiled during the October 4th event is likely to hit the market the following week, possibly Monday the 10th and Friday the 14th, respectively.

Perhaps this could also indicate that the products being unveiled will be smaller and less impressive than we had hoped. An iPhone 4 with a faster GPU isn't really going to be worth renting an enormous conference room for.

Probably did not book anything in advanced because they weren't quite sure when they'd be ready.

Cook has presented on the big stage before so to imply they want to control it for his first appearance is nonsense. If you are the CEO of the largest $$ company in the world you need to be ready to present anywhere.

This is an easy question to answer. Oracle Openworld is from October 1-6 and is the largest trade show in San Francisco. Every venue (and hotel room) is booked solid and has been for months.

Moscone has been completely booked by Oracle for that week.

    You are right.

THe renting of a conference hall will far exceed the profits Apple makes off its next phone.

Why did I not think of that?

    I don't understand either.

Please don't quote spam. we would have to find and clean that out too. Cleaning the original posts is easy, cleaning out quoted spams can be a problem.

The reason is, as always, about control.

Oh please. For spec bumps, Apple doesn't even HOLD an event. They just refresh pages on their website and send out a press release. When the MacBook Air was redesigned in 2010, they did it on stage, but when the Air was given a Core i5 chip and Thunderbolt, they didn't bother.

Exactly, and with a smaller venue, there is more crowd control, since a smaller 4S iPhone update after 15 months deserves to get booed.

Watch them hold the event in NY and introduce NFC Wallet partnership with all major banks.

    They're holding it wrong.

At this point, it seems we have our date.

October 23: exactly ten years after the first iPod was released, Apple will discontinue the iPod classic.

Exactly. The hardware is probably ready to ship, but the iOS5 is likely holding things up. It's clear to me that Apple wasn't sure about the exact date of the event until very, very recently. No sense in booking the Moscone Center a year in advance.
